Today, November 11, is Veterans Day — a day set aside each year to honor and thank all the men and women who have served in the United States Armed Forces. It’s a day of remembrance, reflection, and deep gratitude for the courage, sacrifice, and dedication of America’s veterans, both past and present.

The Origins of Veterans Day

Veterans Day traces its roots to Armistice Day, marking the end of World War I. The armistice between the Allied nations and Germany went into effect on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month in 1918. The following year, President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed November 11 as Armistice Day — a day to honor those who fought and died in what was then called “the war to end all wars.”

In 1954, following World War II and the Korean War, Congress passed legislation — signed by President Dwight D. Eisenhower — to rename the observance Veterans Day, expanding its purpose to honor all American veterans, not just those who served in World War I.

A Day of National Appreciation

Unlike Memorial Day, which honors those who gave their lives in military service, Veterans Day celebrates all U.S. military veterans, living or deceased, who have served honorably in the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, Coast Guard, and Space Force.

Across the nation, ceremonies, parades, and gatherings take place to recognize veterans in communities large and small. Schools, civic groups, and local governments use the day to teach younger generations about the cost of freedom and the importance of service.
