Native to Africa, the serval is a medium-sized wild cat recognized by its golden coat, dark spots and unusually long legs.

Those legs aren’t just for looks.

Servals are impressive hunters capable of using powerful leaps to capture birds and other prey. Their large ears also provide exceptional hearing, helping them detect small animals moving through grass and vegetation.

The combination makes the serval an animal seemingly designed for hunting.

Yet its appearance can sometimes remind visitors of a very tall domestic cat — at least until they get a closer look at the adaptations that make the serval a true wild predator.
