A joint team from Osceola County, the City of Kissimmee, and the City of St. Cloud have distributed hundreds of thousands of sandbags since Saturday. Sandbags will continue to be available today, Tuesday October 8 at Osceola Heritage Park.

Osceola Heritage Park, (Shakerag Road): 1211 Shakerag Road, Kissimmee FL 34744

Hours of Operation: 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. (or until supplies run out), Tuesday, October 8

A second sandbag distribution site will also be open today at the Celebration Athletic & Recreation Complex. Supply at this site is limited and will not be restocked. The distribution will close once the supply is exhausted.

Celebration Athletic & Recreation Complex, 305 Campus St, Kissimmee, FL 34747

Hours of Operation: 7 a.m. until sandbags run out

Supplies will be provided including bags and sand. Residents are allowed 25 sandbags per household and will need to bring their own shovel or filling tool. Supplies are limited, and sandbags will be available for filling on a first-come, first-served basis. Residents who still have uncontaminated sandbags from previous distributions earlier this year are strongly encouraged to reuse those sandbags

“As Hurricane Milton strengthens, Osceola County leaders are working around the clock to safeguard our community, including here in District 1. We encourage all residents to remain calm, stay vigilant, and be prepared for any potential impacts. Hurricane-force winds are now projected for our area, making it essential to take all necessary precautions. To further support our residents, we are opening a second sandbag distribution site today in Celebration. For any questions or concerns, the Citizen Information Center is here to assist. Remember, we are all in this together, and together, we will stay safe.”

— Peggy Choudhry, District 1 Osceola County Commissioner

Shelters

At this time, no evacuations are in effect for Osceola County. However, residents who live in low-lying or flood-prone areas – or in homes with potential structural issues – should have an evacuation plan ready. Daniel Pearson
For Positively Osceola

In what could be a championship preview of next month’s Orange Belt Conference Swimming Championships, Celebration hosted Harmony in a dual meet at Lakeside Park on Wednesday.

The Storm boys’ team, who will be favored to take the OBC title, went to 5-0 on the season with a 117-56 win over Harmony. Last week, the Storm also defeated Gateway (217-54) and Osceola (204-55) in a tri-meet. It was much closer in the girls’ meet, as the Storm edged the Longhorns in the swimming events by an 84-82 score. In the same three-way meet last week, the Storm girls defeated Osceola (167-71) and Gateway (153-105).

“It was senior night, so we let our swimmers decide which individual events they wanted to swim in,” Storm Head Coach Kelly Walton said. “Because of that, I would say that we did not have our strongest lineup at each event.”

Leading the way for the boys’ team was senior Roman Sukhorukov, who won both the 200-free and the 100-breast. Other impressive performances came from Felipe Costa, a senior who earned all-state honors in the 100-backstroke last year, who won that event and senior Greg Kamensky, won the 100-free (0:58.18) by more than seven seconds over the next closest finisher.

In all, the Storm boys won seven of the eight individual swimming events and all three relays. Other individual winners for the Storm included Cunningham in the 50-free (0:25.25), Nate Esteban in the 100-fly (1:32.75).

Harmony picked up wins in the 200-Individual Medley with Bryan Wong (2:37.32) and in the 500-free with Alexander Tanon (6:28.90).

The girls’ meet came down to the final event with the Celebration Storm taking first in the 400-free relay to hold on for the two-point win. In fact the victory could be attributed to the relays, as Celebration also won the 400-Free Relay.

Individual winners for the Storm included a double win by Sarah Moreno in the 100-free and 200-Individual Medley and wins by Sophia Galvao in the 100-breast and Monoi LeHelley in the 50-free.

The Longhorns had a double individual win from Savannah Steele in the 100-fly and 50-free.

Heading into the Orange Belt Conference Championships on Oct. 7, Walton says she feels good about the possibility of a Celebration sweep. “I would think our guys will be favored in the boys meet,” Walton said. “Our girls are right there with Harmony. Diving was not calculated in the dual meet so those points will be important. But the two teams are very close in talent and it should be a great meet.”

A number of students, teachers, and staff at Celebration K-8 during this past week have been impacted by COVID-19 causing the Osceola School District to move all students and teachers at Celebration K-8 to digital learning through TEAMS starting Wednesday, August 25, through Friday, August 27. Students and staff will return for face-to-face learning on Monday, August 30. Students and staff who have been identified as having possible direct contact with an individual who has tested positive for COVID-19 are being notified directly. The school day will continue as scheduled today with regular car and bus dismissal this afternoon.

If students have access to a personal computer or laptop at home, they are encouraged to use it during digital learning. Laptops and hot spots will be distributed only to students who need them for digital learning at home. Parents of students who need a device are asked to fill out a borrower’s form that can be found on Remind, the school’s website, and its social media, and bring it to the school today up until 7:00 p.m. or tomorrow during the school day. Parents and students needing assistance with connectivity and accessing TEAMS are encouraged to call the district’s Digital Learning Support Hotline at 407-870-4037.

Breakfast and lunch meals will be available Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday of this week for curbside pick-up for parents from 10:00 a.m. – 10:30 a.m. at the school in a drive-thru setting. Parents must provide a student’s school ID with name and ID number to pick up meals.

Families and employees are reminded of the importance of monitoring closely for COVID symptoms, including runny nose, cough, fever, headache, and tiredness. Please do not send your child to school on Monday if anyone in your family is experiencing these symptoms during this school closure period. Please contact the school’s office to report a potential COVID case, and it is highly recommended that you seek COVID testing to help us stop the spread of COVID in our school community. The Osceola School District appreciates the understanding, support, and patience from the Celebration K-8 community as we take this precautionary measure to ensure the health and safety of our students and staff members.

At the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, Operation Uplift provided an opportunity for residents in the Celebration, Florida community to purchase yard signs with big red hearts to show their support and admiration for essential workers.

Last year, the Osceola County School District shared nearly 38,000 books were not returned after the 2019-20 school year due to schools closing and the switch to virtual learning. Thousands of these missing books belong to Celebration K-8 School, and this loss has left students with a great need as they are lacking the materials they require to succeed.

With both face-to-face and distance learning happening this 2020-21 school year, the need for both print and digital books has increased tremendously. To kick off Literacy Week, the Celebration Foundation is hosting its first virtual book drive.

Please consider purchasing books by making a monetary donation on the Celebration Foundation’s website. Books cost an average of $20 each. And the Celebration Foundation will match the community’s donations up to $10,000 dollars. So when you purchase a $20 book then another book can be purchased with the Celebration Foundation’s matching funds. It is two books for one!

CLICK HERE to donate and help make a Positive difference in Celebration’s community school library, and give the gift of reading to a student!

Friday’s District 7A-6 boys basketball championship will feature a clash of two of Central Florida’s — and the state’s top 50-ranked — hoops squads as defending Class 9A state champion Osceola meets Windermere, a Class 8A state semifinalist last season, at 7 p.m. at Celebration High School.
After the FHSAA re-organized this year, 7A is now the large-school classification.
The Kowboys (19-6) were the only Osceola County team to advance to a district championship game this week. A 54-49 win over Celebration on Wednesday — the Storm (11-12) dueled with Haines City on Monday and won, 50-49 — put Osceola in the title game against the Wolverines (18-8), who thumped Ridge 71-45 in the other semifinal. Josh Blazquez’s 16 points and Tyrese Caraballo’ 13 led OHS.The potential Osceola-Windermere matchup was highly anticipated when the FHSAA drew up District 7A-6 over the summer.
Poinciana is the county’s only other team who could make the regional playoffs as a wild-card team. The Eagles (13-13) used a strong second half to push past Liberty, 72-51, in the District 6A-6 quarterfinals on Monday. Their Tuesday semifinal was full of intrigue .. for the Winter Haven Blue Devils. PHS lead by 11 in the fourth quarter and by 4 with 15 seconds left to play, but Winter Haven tied it with a 3-pointer and a bucket at the buzzer after an Eagle bucket. Winter Haven went on to win,. 70-67. R.J. Morgan led Poinciana with 14 points. Luis Pena and Fabian De Los Rios each tallied 12.
Other district championship results:
7A-5: Boone 53, Tohopekaliga 38
6A-5: East River 56, St. Cloud 51; Viera 62, Harmony 38
5A-8: Heritage 50, Gateway 43;
2A-11: City of Life 71, All Saints 61 (Monday); Orlando Christian 84, COL 40 (Tuesday).

The Celebration girls soccer team hadn’t reached a district championship game in the 19 years Ed Kuzma has coached the Storm — until Tuesday.

No time like Kuzma’s final year coaching soccer.

Celebration’s Isabella Foster fired a shot into the net from 25 yards out 21 minutes into the Storm’s District 7A-6 semifinal against Freedom, and a stingy defense made it stand up in a 1-0 victory.

The Storm (15-3-3) will host Ridge (14-6-2), who made easy work of Cypress Creek in Tuesday’s other semifinal, in the district championship on Friday at 5:30 p.m.

“Freedom possessed the ball the rest of the first half (after the goal), and our defense refused to break,” Kuzma said. “It wasn’t pretty, but it was enough. In the second half they started to press up, but our girls stepped up as a team. No girl wanted to be the one who broke down to let in a goal.

“It’s a passionate and proud group who’s finally convinced themselves they’re winners.”

In a Region 2 where it’ll probably take winning the district to make the regional playoffs, Celebration girl’s program can make history by making the playoffs for the first time since the school opened in 2003-04. Kuzma will become the Storm’s full-time baseball coach — which is already practicing — this spring.
“No second-guessing, I’m done this soccer season,” he said.

It could be a Celebration doubleheader Friday — if the boys team wins Wednesday at Cypress Creek, they’ll play for their district title Friday at 7:30.

BOYS: VIERA 3, HARMONY 0: The Longhorns (12-4-5) will have to await an at-large berth after falling in Tuesday’s District 6A-9 semifinal.

GIRLS BASKETBALL: WARRIORS NOW 23-0. City of Life rolled past Winter Haven All Saints, 70-14, in Tuesday’s District 2A-11 semifinal. Jayshlynn Vega had 23 points and 9 steals, Shannelle Heredia had 12 points and 8 rebounds, while Sophia Chevres scored 10 points and 7 steals.

The Warriors will go for their fourth consecutive district final Thursday at Orlando Christian Prep at 7 p.m.

WEDNESDAY’S GAMES:
Girls soccer: Harmony vs. Melbourne at Viera (6A-12), 5:30; Tohopekaliga at St. Cloud (6A-9), 5:30.

Boys soccer: Celebration at Cypress Creek (7A-6), 7 p.m.; Tohopekaliga at St. Cloud (6A-9), 5:30 p.m.

Girls basketball: Osceola vs Windermere at Celebration, 5:30 (7A-6); Gateway at Heritage (5A-8), 7 p.m.

Monday saw an intriguing game to open the District 7A-6 girls basketball tournament. The only two Osceola County teams, Osceola and Celebration, met for the right to continue their season Wednesday and face top-seeded Windermere.

It’s the Kowgirls who will go on after a 61-48 victory over the Storm.

Celebration (11-9) stayed in the game for stretches with some very good defensive rebounding, but couldn’t cash in at the offensive end to score enough to keep up with the breakout speed of Osceola (12-8). The Kowgirls also played swarming defense, with five steals in the first quarter alone when they jumped to a 10-3 lead. They stayed in control the whole game.

Still, OHS Coach Dion Bynum said it was a slow start, something they can’t afford Wednesday.

“We played Friday and had the weekend off, so you expected this on a Monday,” he said. “We have some things to overcome defensively. We’re young so some times this kids have it and then get out of control.

“We missed a lot of open shots tonight, we can be better there, which makes me think we have a chance on Wednesday.”

Sophomore Angel Roman poured in 25 points, Mya Lomax added 16 and Yahnae Kindell scored 12.

For Celebration, Selina Rivera led with 22 points and Giomarie Rodriguez added 13.

Elsewhere, it was a good night for basketball teams.

In the 6A-6 tournament, Poinciana scored a 48-33 win over Edgewater Monday, using a 33-13 run in the second half to pull away. The Eagles (8-14) will move on to the semifinals Wednesday against Winter Haven at Bartow.

At the 5A-8 event at Palm Bay Heritage, Gateway used a 26-point first quarter and 20-point fourth quarter to down Eau Gallie, 63-49, for a quarterfinal win. The Panthers (16-9) will play in Wednesday’s semifinal at Heritage at 7 p.m..
