OSCEOLA COUNTY, Fla. — Today marks the official start of the 2026 Atlantic Hurricane Season, and emergency management officials are reminding residents across Central Florida and Osceola County that preparation remains the best defense against severe weather.

The Atlantic Hurricane Season runs from June 1 through November 30, with the peak of hurricane activity typically occurring between August and October.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) recently released its outlook for the 2026 Atlantic Hurricane Season, forecasting a below-average season overall. Forecasters predict between 8 and 14 named storms, with 3 to 6 hurricanes expected to develop, including 1 to 3 major hurricanes reaching Category 3 strength or higher.

Despite the forecast, weather experts continue to emphasize that it only takes one storm making landfall to create significant impacts.

“Don’t let words like below-normal change the way you prepare,” National Weather Service Director Ken Graham said during NOAA’s seasonal outlook announcement.

Officials are encouraging residents to review emergency plans, restock hurricane supply kits, secure important documents, and ensure they have adequate supplies of food, water, medications, batteries, flashlights, and fuel in the event of a storm.

Residents are also reminded that tropical systems can develop quickly, especially those forming close to Florida, leaving little time to prepare once a threat emerges.

In Osceola County, residents are encouraged to sign up for Alert Osceola, the county’s emergency notification system that provides critical updates before, during, and after emergencies, including hurricanes, severe weather, evacuations, flooding, and other public safety events.

Residents can enroll by texting AlertOsceola to 888777.

Emergency management officials also recommend that residents:

Know their evacuation zone

Review insurance coverage

Prepare for possible power outages

Make plans for pets and family members with special medical needs

Keep cell phones and backup batteries fully charged during severe weather threats

As the 2026 Atlantic Hurricane Season gets underway, officials say the best time to prepare is before a storm appears on the forecast. With hurricane season now officially here, residents are encouraged to finalize their plans and ensure they are ready for whatever the season may bring.

Comienza Hoy la Temporada de Huracanes del Atlántico 2026; Autoridades Instan a los Residentes de Osceola a Estar Preparados

CONDADO DE OSCEOLA, Fla.

KISSIMMEE — The Florida Department of Health in Osceola County has issued a rabies alert for a portion of Kissimmee after a cat tested positive for rabies earlier this week.

According to health officials, the alert was issued following the confirmation of rabies in an unvaccinated cat that was euthanized on May 26 in the Academy Circle area of Kissimmee. The Florida Department of Health in Osceola County said it is continuing to monitor rabies activity among wild animals in the area and is urging residents to take precautions to avoid exposure.

The rabies alert will remain in effect for 60 days and covers an area bounded by Fortune Road to the north, Neptune Road to the south, La Terraza Lane to the east, and Heritage Key to the west.

Health officials reminded residents that rabies is present in Florida’s wild animal population and can be transmitted through bites or scratches from infected animals. Wildlife commonly associated with rabies exposure includes raccoons, bats, foxes, skunks, otters, bobcats, and coyotes.

Residents are encouraged to ensure their pets and livestock are current on rabies vaccinations and to keep animals under direct supervision. Officials also advise avoiding contact with wild or stray animals and taking steps to prevent wildlife from entering homes, schools, and other occupied buildings.

Anyone who is bitten or scratched by a wild or domestic animal should seek medical attention immediately and report the incident to the Florida Department of Health in Osceola County. Health officials emphasized that timely post-exposure treatment is highly effective in preventing rabies infection.

Osceola Animal Services is also asking residents to report stray animals and seek veterinary care if a pet or livestock animal is bitten by another animal.

Rabies is a viral disease that affects the nervous system and is almost always fatal once symptoms appear. However, it is preventable through vaccination and prompt medical treatment following exposure.

For additional information about rabies prevention and exposure, residents are encouraged to contact the Florida Department of Health in Osceola County.

The funding was awarded through the Federal Aviation Administration’s Contract Tower Program for Fiscal Year 2026 and is being administered by the U.S. Department of Transportation. The grant was officially awarded on May 18.

KISSIMMEE — Law enforcement officers, elected officials, family members, and community residents gathered Wednesday morning at Bible Baptist Church in Kissimmee for the 2026 Law Enforcement Memorial Ceremony, a solemn tribute honoring the lives and sacrifices of Osceola County officers and correctional personnel who died in the line of duty and beyond.

Hosted with participation from the Osceola County Sheriff’s Office, Florida Highway Patrol, Kissimmee Police Department, St. Cloud Police Department, and Osceola County Corrections, the ceremony served as a moment of remembrance, reflection, and unity for the community and the law enforcement profession.

The morning ceremony began with a welcome from Osceola County Sheriff’s Office Undersheriff Ron Roberts, followed by the posting of colors by the Multi-Agency Honor Guard and the National Anthem performed by Viviana Sosa.

Florida Highway Patrol Auxiliary Major Luis Sterling delivered the invocation, while Captain Lenita King of Florida Highway Patrol introduced elected officials and keynote speaker Major Mark Castleberry of FHP.
One of the most emotional moments came during the Presentation of Wreaths and Roll Call of Heroes, led by Kissimmee Police Chief Charles Broadway and St. Cloud Police Chief Douglas Goerke, as the names of fallen officers were remembered aloud.

“This memorial is about making sure the men and women who gave everything in service to their communities are never forgotten,” said St. Cloud Police Chief Douglas Goerke during the ceremony. “Every single day, law enforcement officers put on the badge and go to work not knowing if they will make it home to their families. Today, we honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice, and we stand beside the families, friends, and fellow officers who continue to carry their memory forward every day.”

The ceremony also included a musical selection of “Because of the Brave,” the traditional “10-7 Message” delivered by Anna Meyer of the Sanford Regional Communications Center and Florida Highway Patrol, and a bagpipe tribute by Officer Michael Rivera of the University of Central Florida Police Department.
