KISSIMMEE, Fla. — The Kissimmee Chain of Lakes once again proved why it’s one of Florida’s premier bass fisheries as professional angler Alec Morrison of Peru, New York, delivered a record-breaking performance to win the Toyota Series event on the Kissimmee Chain of Lakes.
Morrison dominated the three-day tournament, hauling in 15 bass weighing a total of 90 pounds, 14 ounces, shattering the Major League Fishing (MLF) record for a five-fish-limit tournament on the Kissimmee Chain. His winning total surpassed the previous mark of 85 pounds, 12 ounces and secured him the tournament’s $40,500 top prize.
The victory was sealed with a massive Day 3 catch of 37 pounds, 1 ounce, which also set a new single-day MLF weight record on the Kissimmee Chain.
Finishing second was Brody Campbell of Oxford, Ohio, who weighed in 75 pounds over three days.
Morrison’s strategy focused on targeting bass transitioning away from shallow spawning areas and staging along travel routes in deeper water.
“I was hardcore ‘Scopin’,” Morrison said, referring to his use of forward-facing sonar technology. “Those three hours a day were by far the most important for me.”
Tournament rules allowed anglers three hours per day of forward-facing sonar use, and Morrison used that time to locate large bass moving along what he described as “highways” between spawning grounds and staging areas.
While many anglers focused on fishing grass beds where bass had been spawning earlier in the week, Morrison stayed away from those areas.
“A lot of guys this week were going back to the grass, and their fish were depleting,” Morrison said. “I stayed out of the grass and tried to stay around the biggest ones all week.”
Fishing primarily in less than six feet of water, Morrison used several baits throughout the tournament, including a shallow-running jerkbait designed specifically for Florida’s shallow fisheries.
Among his key lures was the Megabass Vision 110 SR, a jerkbait that dives no deeper than four feet — ideal for the shallow vegetation common in Florida lakes.
After shifting away from his primary spot on Day 2, Morrison returned to the area on the final day and quickly filled out a massive bag.
“I basically rolled up and had the weight I did within the first hour and a half — it was pretty magical,” he said.
His catch included several large bass, including an 8-pound, 4-ounce fish that helped power his record-setting total.
Morrison noted that most of the fish he caught were prespawn staging bass and postspawn fish leaving the grass beds, rather than fish actively spawning.
Over the past few years, Morrison has spent considerable time fishing in Florida, often staying with fellow pro Garrett Rocamora of Lake Wales, who finished sixth in the tournament.
Together, the two anglers have spent years studying how bass move through the shallow lakes of Central Florida.
“We’ve spent a lot of time on this lake,” Morrison said. “Over the past few years we’ve blended what we’ve learned, and it’s been something special.”
With the victory, Morrison qualified for the Toyota Series Championship on Pickwick Lake in Tennessee this November, where anglers will compete for a top prize of up to $235,000 and a berth in REDCREST 2027.
The three-day tournament was hosted by Experience Kissimmee and served as the second stop of the Toyota Series Southern Division season.
For Morrison, the victory represents both a personal milestone and validation for the countless hours spent traveling and competing across the country.
“There’s a lot of ups and downs,” Morrison said. “I basically live in my truck, and a win like this makes up for a lot of those downs.”
