KUA customers are now eligible to sign up for the utility’s new surge protection program, which can protect large appliances from electric surges.

The surge protection device is installed directly on the customer’s meter and diverts high-energy surges that can enter through electric power lines from coming into the home.

KUA Surge Protection

Homeowners insurance or renter’s insurance typically doesn’t cover appliance damage caused by electric surges, but customers now have the option to protect expensive appliances through KUA’s Surge Protection Program. Items covered under the program include appliances such as air conditioning equipment, refrigerators, washers and dryers, dishwashers, microwaves, and electric ranges.

Electric surges can be triggered during extreme weather, when animals come into contact with KUA electrical equipment, or when vehicles run into KUA’s electric lines or substations.

“We’re offering this new service to customers in an effort to help them be proactive about protecting their home appliances from electric surges, which they can’t predict,” said Susan Postans, KUA Vice President of Customer Service. “As we head into storm season, we know this new option will provide a great value to our customers.”

Starting the service requires a one-time activation fee of $50.00 plus a monthly service charge of $9.95, which is added to the electric bill.

Customers can enroll in the program online at www.kua.com/surge or by calling KUA at 407-933-9800.

It’s important to remember that central air conditioners, televisions, and direct lightning strikes on a home are not covered under the program. KUA customers who own their homes are eligible for the surge protection program; tenants are not eligible for the program.
