OSCEOLA COUNTY, Fla. — Nine Harmony High School students were arrested Wednesday, October 21, following a violent attack on a 17-year-old student who authorities say was assaulted after attempting to defend another student who was being bullied during lunch.
According to the Osceola County Sheriff’s Office, the incident began on Friday, October 16, when the 17-year-old victim was eating lunch with his girlfriend in the Harmony High School cafeteria. The couple reportedly witnessed another female student being bullied as other students threw carrots at her.
When the victim intervened and told the students to stop throwing food, two male students became involved in a verbal confrontation with him and his girlfriend. Rather than escalate the situation, the victim attempted to walk away with his girlfriend.
However, authorities say the confrontation turned violent later that afternoon.
Shortly after 2:30 p.m., Osceola County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to reports of a physical altercation near a tunnel leading away from Harmony High School. Investigators say the victim was walking toward his vehicle when 16-year-old Joandiel Gomez-Ruiz struck him.
According to investigators, eight additional students, ranging in age from 14 to 18, joined the attack, repeatedly punching the victim in the face and head.
The assault left the teenager bloodied and injured. His mother transported him to a hospital, where he required 11 stitches to close wounds to his face.
Investigators obtained cellphone video of the attack, which deputies used to identify the nine students allegedly involved.
On Wednesday, October 21, deputies returned to Harmony High School and, working in cooperation with school administrators, arrested all nine male students.
Each suspect faces charges of felony aggravated battery and felony inciting a riot.
Two 18-year-old suspects were booked into the Osceola County Jail, while the seven juvenile suspects were transported to the Juvenile Assessment Center.
School District Superintendent Condemns Violence
Osceola School District Superintendent Dr. Mark Shanoff strongly condemned the attack, emphasizing that violence and intimidation have no place in the district’s schools or surrounding community.
“Let me be clear: physical intimidation, threats, or acts of violence of any kind will not be tolerated in our schools or in our community, whether on or off campus,” Shanoff said.
“Such behavior is fundamentally inconsistent with the values of our school district and the standards of conduct we expect from every student. We take these matters seriously, and there must be accountability when those expectations are violated.”
Shanoff also expressed appreciation for the district’s partnership with the Osceola County Sheriff’s Office and other law enforcement agencies, emphasizing their shared responsibility to maintain safe communities and promote respect, responsibility, and accountability among students.
Sheriff Blackmon Praises Victim for Standing Up Against Bullying
Osceola County Sheriff Chris Blackmon delivered a direct warning to students attending public and private schools throughout Osceola County, making clear that acts of violence will result in law enforcement action regardless of whether they occur on school property.
“If you put your hands on another student on or off campus, deputies will arrest you,” Blackmon said.
The sheriff also praised the 17-year-old victim for intervening when he witnessed another student being bullied.
“This victim did the right thing by standing up for another student being bullied,” Blackmon said.
“He is the brave one, the 9 teens that chose violence against him are the cowards.”
Nine Students Facing Felony Charges
The Osceola County Sheriff’s Office identified all nine individuals arrested in connection with the attack. However, Positively Osceola has chosen to withhold the names of the seven juveniles involved, as they are under the age of 18.
The arrests underscore the serious consequences that can follow incidents of bullying, intimidation, and physical violence among students, even when those incidents occur off school grounds.
The investigation also highlights the importance of students reporting bullying and threats to school administrators or law enforcement rather than allowing confrontations to escalate.
The nine individuals have been charged in connection with the incident. The allegations remain subject to the judicial process, and all defendants are presumed innocent unless proven guilty.
