Southwest Airlines Co. has announced a significant shift in its seating policy, moving away from its longstanding open seating model and moving to assigned seating and premium seating options, which include extended legroom, starting in 2025. This decision follows extensive customer research indicating strong preferences for assigned seats, particularly on longer flights.

Southwest’s CEO, Bob Jordan, emphasized that this move is a carefully considered response to evolving customer expectations. The new seating model is expected to attract more customers by offering additional comfort and choice. The airline is also redesigning its boarding process and cabin interiors, including new RECARO seats and expanded overhead bins, to enhance the overall flying experience.

In addition to these seating changes, Southwest will introduce overnight “redeye” flights, expanding its operations to 24 hours. This initiative aims to provide additional revenue opportunities and operational efficiencies.

Ryan Green, previously Chief Commercial Officer, has been appointed as Executive Vice President of Commercial Transformation to oversee these new initiatives. The airline will provide further details on these changes at its Investor Day in late September.

This transition marks a new era for Southwest Airlines, as it adapts to meet the needs of modern travelers while maintaining its unique culture and hospitality.

For more detailed information, Southwest plans to share comprehensive updates during its Investor Day in late September.
