ST. CLOUD, Fla. — The long-awaited transformation of Hopkins Park is moving closer to construction, paving the way for a new community center and expanded recreational amenities at one of St. Cloud’s longstanding neighborhood gathering places.

The St. Cloud City Council awarded the construction contract to Mulligan Constructors Inc. during its August 20 meeting, marking a major milestone in the city’s plans to revitalize the park and provide new opportunities for recreation, sports and community activities.

“This project has been a long time coming, and seeing it finally become a reality is an incredible moment for the Hopkins community,” Council Member Shawn Fletcher said. “For generations, this community has envisioned greater investment in Hopkins Park. I’m proud to have advocated alongside residents and community leaders to help move that vision forward, and I’m grateful to everyone who worked to make this project possible.”

Plans for the renovated park include a new community center, basketball court, baseball field, multi-use fields, community garden and playground. The project will also add a new parking area and include improvements along 17th Street.

Once completed, the expanded facilities are expected to provide additional space for recreation, sports, neighborhood gatherings and community programs while serving residents from across St. Cloud.

“This project has been a priority for the residents in that area for many years, and it’s exciting to see construction almost ready to begin,” Council Member Jennifer Paul said. “It will be an asset and a source of pride not only for that neighborhood but for all of the city of St. Cloud.”

Construction is expected to cost approximately $10.3 million, with additional funding allocated for furniture and equipment inside the new facility.

The city is financing construction through a bond issue that will be repaid using parks impact fees collected from developers for new construction. According to the city, property tax dollars are not being used to fund the Hopkins Park project.

City officials are planning a groundbreaking ceremony to celebrate the start of construction. The date and additional details will be announced once finalized.
