St. Cloud High School and City of Life are bracket champions in holiday hoops classic

What have the county’s varsity teams been doing over the holiday break?

When it comes to girls basketball, it hasn’t been all Christmas cookies and egg nog, that’s for sure.
City of Life and St. Cloud each went 3-0 in their brackets of the Florida Prospects Christmas Tournament at Dr. Phillips High School during the break.

The Warriors won the Gold Bracket of the tournament with three impressive wins, downing Lakeland Santa Fe Catholic, 70-66, on Thursday, Windermere, 53-40, Friday and Jones, 68-66 on Saturday in the title game, which required four three-pointers in the fourth quarter to come from a four-point deficit entering the fourth quarter.

Jayshlynn Vega Rivera scored 20 points, and Janlisse Marty-Marrero and Camilla de Pool-Maisonet added 17 and 14.
It’s what those three have been doing all season, averaging double-digits in points, made more impressive when you realize Vega Rivera is a seventh-grader and de Pool-Maisonet is in eighth grade. The Warriors, the Class 2A state champions in 2018 and a regional finalist last year, are now 13-0 and have wins over a handful of public schools, like the ones in the tournament as well as Lake Nona and Poinciana earlier in the year.

“It’s been different, but these young guns are fun to coach,” Coach Ray Buggs said, noting the last two seasons were led by veteran players and presences.

The Warriors, who will play at Gateway on Jan. 16, have just one home game left, Jan. 31 against Poinciana.

The Bulldogs knocked off Strawberry Crest, 68-56, Lake Minneola, 56-49 and the host Dr. Phillips Panthers, 42-40, Thursday through Saturday to bring home the Silver Bracket trophy. Add that to winning one of two games in the Bishop Kenny Christmas Classic the weekend before in Jacksonville, and St. Cloud went 4-1 against stout competition over the break despite playing stretches of it without two starters.

“Those were three very good wins last weekend,” Coach Chad Ansbaugh said. “Strawberry Crest has two girls bigger than Eno (Inyang, the Bulldogs’ 6-1 center), Lake Minneola has the pieces to be a very good team and Dr. Phillips has the pedigree of winning their district almost every year. The light bulb went on these last two weeks about these girls playing together and figuring things out that they had to.”

Inyang was named Silver bracket MVP, and shooting guard Beka Benge, who scored her 1,000th career point right before the holiday break, was named to the All-Tournament team.

The Bulldogs are now 9-5 and will play a tough back-to-back of road games against Boone Wednesday and Seminole on Thursday. The team won’t be back home until Jan. 20 when its plays old rival Osceola. St. Cloud may be unveiling its new court surface and logos that night (it may be done before Jan. 13’s boys game against Cypress Creek, so stay tuned).

They aren’t the only girls teams having solid seasons. Gateway is 10-3 after a pair of holiday wins at New Smyrna Beach (47-37) and Ormond Beach Calvary Christian (73-6) over the break; Osceola (6-4) went 1-2 in the ultra-competitive Jim Clark Holiday Classic at Bishop Moore, beating DeLand, 68-22 on the Thursday; Celebration (7-4) was 1-1 at the Mount Dora Bible Holiday tournament, and Liberty is 5-5 heading into 2020.

Cadets of Class 2018-03 Graduate from Criminal Justice Academy of Osceola

On Thursday evening, March 7, 2019, the Criminal Justice Academy of Osceola held the Law Enforcement Officer Academy Graduation for Class 2018-03 at Osceola High School. After 5 1/2 months, 29 cadets proudly walked across the stage to accept their Certificate of Training, completing 770 training hours. Of those 29 cadets, 23 of them graduated in uniform. The 23 in uniform have already accepted a position at one of the 5 agencies: Osceola County Sheriff’s Department, Kissimmee Police Department, St. Cloud Police Department, Brevard County Sheriff’s Office or Volusia County Sheriff’s Office.

“The new recruits will have another 6 months of training with their agency before actually going out on the field alone,” says Guy Samuelson, Director for the Criminal Justice Academy of Osceola. These new recruits now have the knowledge, the training, and the drive to become some of the best Law Enforcement Officers in Central Florida. The 770 hours of training included hands-on training, in the class training, and much more.

The Criminal Justice Academy of Osceola is certified by the Florida Criminal Justice Standards and Training Commission to deliver all Commission-approved curricula to law enforcement, correctional, and correctional probation officers in Florida. The Criminal Justice Academy of Osceola provides 3 classes a year for individuals interested in becoming a Law Enforcement officer, and the training center is located at Osceola Technical College Kissimmee campus. Located in Region VII, CJAO is a regional training facility and conducts advanced and specialized training for certified law enforcement, correctional probation, and correctional officers throughout central Florida.

Six Cadets to Shave Their Heads in Support of St. Baldrick’s Foundation in Kissimmee

Join six of the Criminal Justice Academy of Osceola Cadets from Class 2019-01 as they make a positive difference by shaving their heads at this years’ St. Baldrick’s 3rd Annual Shave Fest!

The Kissimmee Police and Fire Rescuers not only serve and protect, but they also give back to their community anytime they can. On March 9, 2019, the Kissimmee Police and Fire Rescuers will be hosting the St. Baldrick’s 3rd Annual Shave Fest to support a member of the Kissimmee Police Department family, Leila. This special event will be held on March 9, 2019, at 3 Sisters Speakeasy from 4:00 PM to 9:00 PM.

“We encourage our cadets to get involved throughout the community by volunteering, whether it be community service, participating in local events, or just giving back to the community.”

When Leila was just 19 months old, her parents learned their beautiful daughter had cancer, stage four Neuroblastoma. Leila has faced twelve rounds of radiation, six rounds of immunotherapy, five rounds of chemotherapy, two stem cell transplants and a number of surgeries over the past year and a half. Thanks to foundations like St. Baldrick’s, Leila recently began a clinical trial. Leila is now 3 years old and doing much better but her fight continues.

Cadets Brendan Berwanger, Justin Wybirial, Shawn Aultman, Rodney Turner, Derek Rivers, and Zachary Galbraith, from Class 2019-01 of the Criminal Justice Academy of Osceola will be sitting in the hot seat to have their heads shaved alongside their team captain, Guy Samuelson, Criminal Justice Academy of Osceola Director. This is Samuelson’s third year participating in the St. Baldrick’s Shave Fest.

You too can help raise funds to combat childhood cancer as well. If you decide to not shave your head, you can still be as involved by volunteering or donating. By participating in this year’s St. Baldrick’s 3rd Annual Shave Fest, you will be helping the fight for Leila, and children like her.
