Starting March 31, 2025, the City of Kissimmee will officially reduce the speed limit to 25 MPH on Emmett Street, Broadway, and Main Street to enhance safety for all road users.

This decision follows extensive community feedback and a comprehensive traffic analysis, which concluded that lowering the speed limit will create safer conditions for pedestrians, cyclists, and drivers alike.

“As part of our commitment to improving safety and mobility in Downtown Kissimmee, we are taking action to reduce the speed limit,” said City Manager Mike Steigerwald. “This speed reduction is just one of many upcoming enhancements, including the Connect Kissimmee Project, aimed at improving walkability, accessibility, and overall safety in the area.”

The city says that the 5 MPH adjustment in speed can make a big impact and provide drivers with improved reaction time, increase pedestrian survival rate in a crash, and, in some cases, improve the flow of traffic due to a reduction in the need for sudden braking and acceleration.

The speed limit change will be marked with new signage throughout the area, which stretches from John Young Parkway to Vine Street (HW 192). The initial implementation will primarily focus on educating drivers about the new speed limit, followed by long-term enforcement when necessary to ensure compliance.

In a celebration of urban revitalization and community progress, the City of Kissimmee, along with Mosaic Development, held the grand opening of its 9-acre residential project, Mosaic at Lake Toho, an ambitious component of the city’s comprehensive downtown lakefront park renovation, which represents a pivotal milestone in Kissimmee’s goal of fostering a vibrant, connected, and thriving downtown community.

Formerly the site of the Hansel Power Plant, which Kissimmee sold to Mosaic developers for $1.16 million back in 2014, Mosaic at Lake Toho is poised to welcome between 800 to 1,000 residents to the heart of downtown Kissimmee. Boasting 388 thoughtfully designed studio, one-bedroom, two-bedroom, and three-bedroom apartments, Mosaic at Lake Toho stands as a testament to the city’s commitment to fostering a diverse, inclusive, and dynamic living environment for its residents.

During the grand opening ceremony, led by Kissimmee Mayor Olga Gonzalez, City Manager Mike Steigerwald, and Roxanne Amoroso, lead Principal of Mosaic Development Company, the collaborative efforts between the city and Mosaic Development were highlighted as a testament to their shared vision of fostering a vibrant and inclusive urban landscape, and that the project, that successfully navigated through COVID, product shortages, and human resource challenges, was not a simple one.

“Today, the Mosaic Apartments, and its new residents that call Downtown Kissimmee home, have already brought more business to our local merchants and restaurants, and hopefully will continue to encourage others to strongly consider downtown Kissimmee as a place to operate a business bringing even more attention and visitors to the area,” Kissimmee Mayor Olga Gonzalez shared before the ribbon cutting.

“The City of Kissimmee’s vision to renovate the lakefront 20 to 25 years ago was to bridge the gap between downtown and the lakefront park, and to fill the area with development that will bring people living downtown that have disposable income, that can walk and be a sustainable consumer base for our business community in the downtown Kissimmee area,” City Manager Mike Steigerwald shared.

The City of Kissimmee’s Development Services Department will host a public workshop on Wednesday, July 27, 2022, at 6:00 p.m. to receive input on noise-related concerns within the City of Kissimmee limits.

The City has noticed an increase in noise complaints in recent years and a large volume of repeat complaints. To address the increasing issue, the City is revising the Noise Ordinance and its internal processes to regulate noise disturbances more effectively.

The meeting is open to the public and the virtual room is currently open for those seeking more information about this process. In the meantime, the City of Kissimmee is requesting public feedback by responding to a survey by the end of July 2022.

Ciudad Organiza Taller Público Para Discutir Preocupaciones Relacionadas Al Ruido

Headquarters Coworking is more than doubling in size, expanding from a beta, 1,100 sqft, three membership program upstairs in the Headquarters Coworking building located in downtown Kissimmee to more than 5,100 sqft over two floors with six membership levels.

Since its inception three years ago, Headquarters Coworking has grown from an average of eight members, including through the pandemic, to 30 members in various industries, including mobile app and software developers, creatives like marketers, surface designers, and videographers, to professional services like realtors, insurance agents, accountants, and engineers.

“Over the last four years, meeting other entrepreneurs in this community, people visiting the area, or remote workers just looking to get out of their home office has really made this vision of coworking come to life. We’re looking forward to being the headquarters for many other companies starting right now,” said Kelly Trace, entrepreneur in residence and founder of Headquarters Coworking.

Membership price points start at $75 per month for a 5-day pass or virtual office to $400 for a dedicated desk. There is a group membership at $900 per month that can include a permanent desk and four memberships that also allow for open seating perfect for those who have teams. All memberships include free WiFi, snacks, drinks, use of our conference room spaces (with six conference rooms available!), color laser printing and free parking.

“Joining Headquarters Coworking has been an amazing step in my business. More than a business move, it has been joining a family, expanding and growing alongside awesome people who make the entrepreneur journey fun,” stated Diana Marquez EA, business consultant at Blueone Consultants, Inc and member of Headquarters Coworking.

Aside from being steps away from 30 restaurants and coffee shops, the campus is close to City and County government buildings, the Downtown Kissimmee SunRail station, small business development organizations and green spaces like Kissimmee Lakefront Park.

As a celebration of the expansion, Headquarters Coworking is hosting an expansion party in late April. Prospective members can book a tour online to see the space and join on-site.

If you frequent Downtown Kissimmee in the evening you’ve likely noticed a beautiful glow in the area. That’s because Kissimmee Utility Authority, in partnership with the City of Kissimmee, installed decorative LED accent uplighting in the median of Broadway in late 2021. The eco-friendly LEDs beautifully lit the downtown area throughout the holiday season and continue to so on Kissimmee’s Downtown trees and business area for all to see.

That kind of positive improvement to the downtown is exactly what the Downtown Kissimmee Council’s Beautification and Innovation Award is about. Every two months the DKC selects a Downtown Kissimmee business or organization that has made significant improvements to the exterior or interior areas of their business location. The DKC was proud to be able to name KUA and the City of Kissimmee February and March’s recipients of the award.

On Thursday evening, January 20 the DKC made it official; and presented officials from Kissimmee Utility Authority and the City of Kissimmee the Beautification and Innovation Award.

In attendance at the ceremony were KUA’s President and General Manager Brian Horton, KUA’s Assistant Vice President of Engineering and Operations, Jason Terry, Kissimmee Mayor Olga Gonzalez, and Kissimmee Commissioner Olga Castaño. Representing the Downtown Kissimmee Council was Keith Ronan, Chairman of the DKC and Vice President of Positively Osceola, Emily Shorrock – Director of Industry Partner Relations with Experience Kissimmee, and Christina Pilkington, Director of Administration with the Kissimmee/Osceola County Chamber of Commerce.

Congratulations to KUA and to the City of Kissimmee and thank you for making a Positive Difference in and around Osceola County.

Calling it a “proactive step”, Kissimmee Police Chief Jeff O’Dell said he worked with those in the community to hold a peaceful march tonight in solidarity in reaction to the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis at the hands of police there.

The march begins at 6 p.m. at the Kissimmee Civic Center and will head down Broadway to KPD headquarters. Crowd staging will begin at 5.

“The protests were coming,” O’Dell said. “Hopefully we can begin a healing process and a way to move forward.”

By the middle of the afternoon, four businesses on or adjacent to Broadway had boarded up their shops.

“Indications are this will be peaceful,” O’Dell said. “Let’s make Kissimmee be an example, that we denounce police brutality and that behavior. We can’t hear the concerns of our residents if businesses are set on fire or damaged.”

On the subject of a curfew, Osceola County Sheriff Russ Gibson said at today’s County Commission meeting that he is not seeking one, but wouldn’t oppose one either. O’Dell said any talk he’s had about it is “on standby.”

“It’s not needed at this time, but we’re capable of implementing one at a moment’s notice,” he said.
