Osceola County Animal Services is seeing an increasing number of animals in need of forever homes, prompting local leaders to step up their advocacy for pet adoptions.

Osceola County Commissioner Brandon Arrington and State Senator Kristen Arrington, both lifelong advocates for animal welfare, are actively working to raise awareness about the growing need for pet adoptions. Partnering with Osceola County Animal Services, the Arringtons are helping connect residents with their perfect pet matches while encouraging responsible pet ownership.

“Our shelter is at capacity, and there are so many wonderful animals waiting for loving homes,” said Commissioner Arrington. “By adopting a pet, you’re not only saving a life but also making room for more animals in need.”

Throughout the entire month of February, pet adoptions will be just $14, making it more affordable than ever to bring home a new furry friend. To make the process even easier, every adoption includes a complimentary crate or pet carrier (while supplies last).

“February is all about love, and what better way to celebrate than by giving a shelter pet a loving home?” said Commissioner Brandon Arrington. “There are so many amazing animals in need of families, and we want to encourage our community to adopt, don’t shop. Every adoption saves a life.

Why Adoption Matters

Pet adoption not only changes the life of the animal but also helps reduce overcrowding in shelters. According to the ASPCA, approximately 6.3 million companion animals enter U.S. shelters each year, with nearly 1 million euthanized due to a lack of space and resources. Choosing adoption over purchasing from pet stores or breeders helps combat this crisis and provides pets with a forever home.

Osceola County residents who are interested in adopting can visit OsceolaCountyPets.com or call 407-742-8000 for more information.

As temperatures climb during the summer months, it’s crucial to ensure our pets stay cool and comfortable. Osceola County Animal Services highlights the importance of protecting our furry friends from the harsh effects of heat during National Pet Month. This includes providing them with plenty of fresh water, limiting their outdoor activities during peak heat hours, and ensuring they have access to cool, shaded areas. Additionally, it’s important to avoid walking pets on hot asphalt, as it can burn their paws. Remember, if the ground is too hot for your hand, it’s too hot for their paws.

If you’re considering adding a pet to your family, visiting your local shelter during the summer can be a wonderful opportunity. Osceola County Animal Services hosts many wonderful animals that are eagerly waiting to find their own forever homes. If you have questions about how to keep your pet safe from the heat or need any tips on pet care during the summer, the shelter staff are more than happy to assist. They can provide valuable insights and support to ensure your potential new companion thrives in their new environment.

Adopting a pet can bring immense joy and companionship into your life. Making sure they stay cool and comfortable during the hot summer days is essential for a happy, healthy relationship with your furry friend. Ensuring that your pet remains hydrated and protected from the heat not only contributes to their well-being but also deepens the bond you share. Visit your local shelter today and you might just find the perfect addition to your family.

Osceola County animal advocates of adoption of shelter pets will be very happy with a new ordinance passed last week by the Board of County Commissioners. The ordinance mandates that any new outlets opening that sell pets must get those animals from animal shelters or other pet-rescue operations, and not from commercial breeders, brokers or wholesalers.

It’s an attempt to limit animals coming from crowded breeding mills, where they can carry infectious diseases; Florida pet stores are a primary destination for mill-generated dogs and cats.

The main point of the new ordinance “requires that pet shops utilize an adoption-based business model, which ensures that the transactions for animals at retail outlets are sourced from shelters and animal rescue organizations, encouraging the adoption of homeless pets and reducing the financial and emotional toll on consumers who purchase mill-bred pets with latent physical and behavioral problems.”

Osceola County is doing what other Florida counties have already done. An “Adoption-Based Business Model” means one where dogs and cats offered must be taken in by an animal shelter rescue organization to re-home stray and abandoned pets.

Any pet shop found to be in violation of the provisions of this new ordinance could be charged with a misdemeanor. Each animal kept or sold in violation of this Section will be deemed a separate offense.

The new language does not apply to lawfully-operating pet shops already in business, until they are sold, lose or let their business licenses lapse, or become in violation of any local, state or federal regulations; at that time, the pet shop shall be subject to this section.

Looking to adopt a pet? Osceola County Animal Services, in partnership with Christmas for the Kids Osceola, have waived cat adoption fees and dog adoption fees are $10 when you donate a new, unwrapped child’s toy with a minimum value of $10. Help a homeless pet and help children in need this holiday season! This special is good through December 23rd.

On Monday, June 10th, during the Osceola County Commissioner’s Meeting, Kim Stanton, Osceola County Animal Services Director, shared an update on the Animal Services in Osceola County and how the L.E.A.S.H program is assisting families struggling to keep their pets.

According to the report, the L.E.A.S.H program has been very well received by community members and there is now an understanding that the program increases the chance for a live outcome for the pets.

L.E.A.S.H. or Let Every Animal Stay at Home began in 2017, and with grant money and donation dollars, this program has shown tremendous promise to Osceola County pet owners with the assistance of help to owners by offering low-cost vaccinations, discounted pet food, basic wellness, other veterinary services, or rehoming assistance. By allowing pet owners the opportunity to have some assistance, pets have a better chance of staying with their current owners or being relocated to a new owner. Either way, it’s a win for the pet!

About 40 percent of pet owners who relinquish pets to shelters say they would keep them if there was temporary assistance available, according to studies by the ASPCA. Osceola Animal Services is trying to fill that gap to help pet owners not only keep their pets but provide proper care for them as well. In the 2016-17 fiscal year the Osceola County Animal Shelter saw 2,135 animal surrenders and by the following year, it dropped to 1,281.

A pet retention team meets with the families in need of assistance to see if there’s a way to help them while conducting a needs assessment interview.

Another great program offered is Dogs Playing for Life, which was created by Amy Sadler and allows dogs at the Osceola County Animal Shelter to actually run around in playgroups with other dogs. The playtime is typically an hour long and is monitored by staff or volunteers, giving the dogs the opportunity to release energy and learn social skills from one another. Staff is then able to learn if the pet is ready for adoption.

June is National Pet Adoption Month and in celebration, the Osceola County Animal Services is offering specials on adoptions which includes spay/neuter, rabies, and core vaccines, parasite control, pet license and of course a furry friend for life!

$10 for kittens 6 months and younger

Adoption Fee waived for ALL cats 6 months and older

$20 adoption fee for dogs which includes all of the items listed above and a heartworm check

For more information on the L.E.A.S.H. program or any other programs offered at the Osceola County Animal Services including adoptions and volunteering please visit OsceolaCountyPets.com.

Thank you Kim Stanton, the staff, and volunteers at the Osceola County Animal Services for making a Positive Difference by providing these amazing programs and for helping Osceola County residents keep or relocate their furry friends.
