On Tuesday night, the fellowship Hall next to Hope Commons in Kissimmee was filled with community leaders, elected officials, and members of the community, all coming together to celebrate 10 years of Hope Partnership’s accomplishments, and to support the organization in continuing its mission of ensuring that everyone has a safe place to call home.

Hope Partnership empowers neighbors, strengthening community, and builds hope, something we should all be doing every day, and as CEO Reverend Mary Lee Downey said during the 10th anniversary celebration, it doesn’t happen without the community’s help, “I’m incredibly proud of the partners that are in this room who have stood along-side us and said that they also believe that the world can be different. It takes belief to say that we do not have to have poverty or homelessness in our community, and the people in this room believe that with us, and that is a gift.”

From their beginning, Hope Partnership, then called Hope Community Center, was a two-person operation consisting of Founder and Chief Executive Officer Rev. Mary Lee Downey, and Chief Development Officer Angie Rench. At the 10-year mark, the organization has a team of almost 30 and has has served over 100,000 heartbeats with housing, food, clothing, and a variety of services including Identification, employment, and case management.

“We thank you all for supporting us, for supporting Mary 10 years ago, and the work that is so important in our community and throughout Central Florida,” Hope Partnership Chair Adriana Sekula said during the anniversary event.

“And now we look at the future, today is, crazily enough, the 50th anniversary of the Fair Housing Act, and the law in 1968, was supposed to address the inequities that are in our nation that have kept so many of our neighbors from finding a safe place to call home,” Mary Lee Downey shared during the event. It’s a half a century later, and we’re still struggling with the same barriers.”

During the anniversary reception, a representative from State Representative Kristen Arrington’s office presented Reverend Downey with a tribute, and thanked Hope Partnership for their hard and commitment to the community.

As Downey spoke to those at the reception she told a story of the early years when she told her board members that they would never be involved with housing, or become a housing organization, but currently, Hope Partnership is closing in on the goal of converting an old hotel into 34 attainable housing units for those that are the most vulnerable in the community, certainly a testimony to the willingness of the Hope Partnership to “pivot’ in order to meet the needs of the community.

Reverend Downey received a stout round of applause when she shared with the crowd that when the current hotel conversion project is complete, they’ll be going on to the next one!

“We want to make sure that we are part of the solution in this community, and that means that we have stepped into the realm of housing developer, Downey said during the anniversary reception. “We are so grateful for each of you, and grateful for this time, and I am grateful, thank you.”

In addition to the reception to commemorate the milestone, Hope Partnership began its 10 years, 10 days, 10K fundraising campaign April 11. If you would like to donate, please use this link. https://bit.ly/10Y10D10K

With this new program, we hope to raise $100,000.00 to continue serving our neighbors most in need. If you are willing to join us in this campaign, we’ll be that much closer to meeting our goal!

Our work would not be possible without a caring community. Through your support, YOU are a hero to those in need of housing stability, identification, food security, safety, and hope.

We hope you will consider joining us by becoming a Hope Champion. The Sponsorship Packet includes pricing and benefits so you can find the level that’s right for you.

As we close 2021 and look forward to 2022, it may feel like it’s a little hard to find hope. If your holiday was like mine, you saw friends and family get sick, saw health care workers feel unsupported, and may have wondered how we are still stuck in this never-ending pandemic. As the CEO and founder of The Hope Partnership, we saw the added fear of those who were unable to find suitable housing or struggled with food insecurity during a time that should be filled with happiness and joy.

It was and remains a very hard time. And yet. We still have hope. One of my favorite quotes states, “And sometimes, against all odds, against all logic, we still hope.” I’ve tried to figure out online who said that, and it might have been the main character of Grey’s Anatomy, and if it was, that still very much works. Every episode of that show is constant drama, and well, these days feel that way too.

As we step into 2022, it might feel hopeless, but we can, against all that we know, still look for the hope. I truly believe that we can end our housing crisis in this community. Will that be easy? No. But, I hope that with the right mix of folks around the table by the end of 2022 we will see even more housing options available to those who are the backbone of our workforce in hospitality and tourism.

I believe this, because, even though 2021 was a hard year at Hope Partnership, we still saw over 200 of our neighbors move into housing that were previously experiencing homelessness. Of that 200, 25 were people who had been living on the streets for more than two years. Even in our hardest times as an organization, people still found hope and housing. And I believe that can continue. It’s one thing to simply hope for things to get better, it’s another to continue to be a part of an organization that wants to bring that hope to fruition.

In 2022, it may not make sense, and it may feel like all the odds are stacked against us, and yet: we will still hope. Happy New Year Friends!

We’ve got the re-zoning now for our new housing development, so we’re looking at 2020 as the year we see that project grow. We will we closer to breaking ground at the end of the year than now, as there’s a lot of work to do and processes to happen. In the meantime, we have goals to house more families and have our iDignity events, and keep doing the work we’ve been doing.

When you look at the end of the next decade, how will how you go about your mission look different?
“It’s my hope that in 10 years time, we’ll see neighborhoods along this corridor, and the people who work in Osceola County have the chance to also play in Osceola County and build community, and the Hope Center wants to be a part of that. I hope we have stronger industry and awareness to other job opportunities. That we can come up with a strategy to build housing across the entire spectrum of need, from blue-collar workers to executives.

“We have a wonderful opportunity to bring awareness and attention to the issues we’re struggling with, that there are no quick fixes and it may take 10 years to provide full solutions to the issues in our community. Those take strategies that take longer than a year to achieve. I hope we continue the good work in building strategies so Osceola County looks like a thriving community.”

Positively Osceola would like to thank Reverend Mary Lee Downey for her tireless passion for those in need, and for her amazing team that never grows weary in well-doing. Your are all making a Positive Difference in Osceola County… every day.

It was standing room only Monday night at 1 Courthouse Square as County Commissioner Peggy Choudhry spoke to concerned citizens about the number of homeless residents currently living in Osceola County and why she needs the communities support to help accomplish much needed change.

In attendance at Monday’s meeting were local business owners, religious leaders, Non-Profits as well as concerned citizens who all have the same question, what can we do to help these folks in need get back on their feet? Choudhry recently visited an organization in New Jersey that has all but eradicated their homeless issue by opening what she referred to as a “One Stop Shop”, a place where people already homeless or on the verge of can come to receive services such as job placement, health care, hot meals, temporary lodging as well as therapy services.

The ultimate goal at this center is to provide temporary assistance until these individuals can be placed in permanent housing. Choudhry has presented a detailed plan on how such a center could be brought to Osceola County to her fellow Commissioners, but she has faced opposition based on funding. She urges us all to do our homework. In researching we find that by providing such services, we actually spend less. Currently, millions of dollars are spent annually providing emergency room care for homeless residents. In addition, they are often arrested and that eats away at tax payer dollars as well.

Several folks spoke tonight about their personal experiences of being homeless or taking care of those who are. There was no shortage of comradery or passion for this cause. The community seems determined to find a solution to this ever-increasing problem and are open to new ideas and suggestions from the community. The next meeting to further discuss the issue will be held on February 28th at 5:30pm at the same location.
