Rodeo cowboys and cowgirls have traveled around the world to get the chance to come to Kissimmee to compete in the 142nd Silver Spurs Rodeo. This year the Silver Spurs Rodeo celebrated its 75th Anniversary. The bull riding, barrel racing, steer wrestling excitement began on Friday, February 16th and came to an end on Sunday afternoon. The 142nd Silver Spurs Rodeo saw some of the largest crowds ever because of this special anniversary. With the biggest cash payouts east of the Mississippi the Silver Spurs Rodeo brings in the best of the best.
Sunday was the day of champions with all of the top competitors in all of the different categories riding for the grand prize and the 1st place title of the 142nd Silver Spurs Rodeo. If you missed the rodeo here is a list of the events along with the winners.
Saddle Bronc Riding – The Saddle Bronc rider keeps one hand on the rein and one hand in the air. The judges look at the rider’s control of the bronc, spurring action, and if the rider is able to keep his toes pointed outward. For the bronc, the judges consider it’s bucking ability and if the ride is smooth and rhythmic. Winning 1st place, Jacobs Crawley was awarded $4,906.80.

Bareback – Nate S. McFadden took home 1st place in the Barebacking Riding competition winning $5,477.85. The judging is based off the bronc and the rider. The cowboy will pull his knees up when the bronc bucks, rolling his spurs up the bronc’s sides and will straighten his legs to the bronc’s shoulder when the bronc descends. The riders will repeat this motion for the course of the ride or, ideally, eight seconds.

Bull Riding – Like bareback and saddle bronc riding, riders are judged not only on their performance during the ride but also the judges look at the roughstock. The rider and the bull can receive a max of 50 points each during a ride, meaning they could score a total of 100 points. Gray Essary III, wowed the judges with his bull riding skills bringing his score to 86.0 point and allowing him to take home the 1st place, $5,329.28 cash payout!

Tie Down Roping – Jobe Johns and Kolt Henrderson tied for 1st place, both scoring 8.0 during the Tie Down Roping portion of the Silver Spurs Rodeo. After roping the calf, the cowboy would jump off his horse and flank the calf (picking it up and laying it on the ground). When the calf ifson the ground, the cowboy must tie any three of the calf’s legs together using a “piggin” strong. Once all of this is complete, he then throws his hand in the air signaling to the judge and the timing then stops. Both contestants received $2,526.25 for placing 1st place.

Steer Wrestling – Also known as bulldogging, steer wrestling is a rodeo event that demonstrates strength and teamwork between a bulldogger, hazer, and their horses. Will Lummus scored 4.0, placing him in 1st place for Steer Wrestling and received a $2,486.30 cash payout.

Team Roping – This event is a true team event requiring coordination and timing between two cowboys, the “header” and the “heeler.” Kaston Peavy and Jason Garcia showed fantastic teamwork placing them on the top with a score of 5.1 and a cash payout of $3,118.80 each.

Barrel Racing – Contestants enter the arena at full speed on their horse, the timer begins when they cross the start line. With barrels on the left and right side of the arena, the rider is allowed to run around the barrel of their choice first and then run across to the opposite side before sprinting towards the third and final barrel. Once the contestant has reached the third barrel they run as fast as they can towards the finished line where the clock will stop. Angie Hammoack was the leader in this category with the finish time of 15.38 seconds. Angie won 1st place and the cash payout of $3,177.20.
