ST. CLOUD, Fla. — As Memorial Day approaches, many Americans are reminded that the nation’s military holidays each carry a distinct meaning and purpose, honoring different groups connected to military service and sacrifice.
According to awareness campaigns promoted by Wreaths Across America, Armed Forces Day recognizes those currently serving in the military, Memorial Day honors those who died while serving the nation, and Veterans Day pays tribute to all who have served in the United States Armed Forces.
Armed Forces Day, observed on the third Saturday in May, honors the men and women currently serving in the United States military across all branches of service.
Memorial Day, observed on the last Monday in May, is dedicated to remembering military personnel who died while serving in the United States Armed Forces. Communities nationwide often mark the holiday with ceremonies, flag displays, moments of silence, cemetery tributes, and remembrance events honoring fallen heroes.
Veterans Day, observed annually on November 11, honors all military veterans who have served in the Armed Forces during both wartime and peacetime.
As communities throughout Osceola County begin preparing for Memorial Day observances, local organizations and leaders are also hosting events designed to honor service members and remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice for the country.
Earlier this week, The Museum of Military History hosted an Armed Forces Day event at the historic Grand Army of the Republic Hall in St. Cloud, bringing together veterans, active-duty military members, and residents for a day focused on military history, remembrance, and community support.
Following the Armed Forces Day observances in St. Cloud, additional Memorial Day tributes are also planned across Osceola County in the coming days. Representative Paula Stark will host the 3rd Annual “Honoring the Brave” Memorial Day Service on May 25 at 4 p.m. at 65th Infantry Veterans Park in Kissimmee. This year’s ceremony will include a special recognition of the Borinqueneers and feature Retired Major General Antonio J. Vicens as the guest speaker. The free public event will provide another opportunity for residents to come together in remembrance and gratitude for the men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to the nation.
Veteran organizations and community groups continue encouraging Americans to pause and reflect on the true meaning of Memorial Day — remembering those who gave their lives in service to the United States.
