KENANSVILLE, Fla. — One of the world’s largest antelopes might not look like an animal built for impressive athletic feats, but the eland has a few surprises.

Visitors can get a closer look at these remarkable African animals while exploring Wild Florida Adventure Park’s Drive-Thru Safari Park in Kenansville.

The eland is a large antelope native to Africa. Adult males can weigh well over 1,000 pounds, giving the animal an imposing presence that’s difficult to appreciate until you see one up close.

Despite their size, elands can be surprisingly agile and are capable of jumping impressive heights.

Both males and females can have horns, which typically grow with a distinctive spiral. Males tend to become larger and heavier as they mature.

Elands are herbivores, feeding on grasses, leaves and other vegetation, and their ability to live in a variety of habitats has helped them thrive across portions of Africa.

At Wild Florida, visitors don’t need a passport or a transatlantic flight to get a taste of an African wildlife adventure.

Families travel through the 170-acre Drive-Thru Safari Park in their own vehicle along a four-mile route featuring more than 150 exotic and native animals.

Along the way, guests can encounter giraffes, zebras, wildebeest, bison, Watusi cattle and other animals — with something different potentially waiting around every turn.

After the safari, visitors can explore Wild Florida’s Gator Park or take the adventure onto the water with an airboat tour through the Headwaters of the Florida Everglades.
