The makers of Similac®, Alimentum®, and EleCare® have issued a voluntary recall for some of its baby formula products that were produced in the Abbott Nutrition’s facility in Sturgis, Michigan. The recall affects select powder baby formula from those brands following consumer complaints of illness in babies.

The FDA is advising consumers not to use Similac, Alimentum, or EleCare powdered infant formulas if:

• The first two digits of the code are 22 through 37; and

• The code on the container contains K8, SH, or Z2; and

• The expiration date is 4-1-2022 (APR 2022) or later.

If your child is experiencing any Cronobacter infection symptoms or Salmonella symptoms, you should seek medical care for your child immediately.

Individuals should not use recalled infant formula and contact their health care provider for guidance on alternative infant formula use. If you are a Florida Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) Program participant, do not use the recalled infant formula and do not discard or throw it out.

Impacted Florida WIC Program participants should contact their local WIC office for information on how to return recalled infant formula for alternative replacements. The Florida Department of Health is also reaching out to Florida WIC Program participants.

Over 33,000 pounds of frozen pot stickers have been recalled by a California-based food manufacturer after customers reported they found plastic in Ling Ling’s Chicken & Vegetable potstickers.

Customers have reported finding clear flexible and hard plastic in the “Ling Ling POTSTICKERS CHICKEN & VEGETABLE” produced by Ajinomoto Foods North America Inc.

The impacted 4.2 pound bags have a “BEST BUY” date of 22 OCT 2022 on the label and are lot code 1911203.

“The products subject to recall bear establishment number “P20069” printed on the back of the package. These items were shipped to distribution centers in California and Washington and from there sent to retailer locations,” according to the USDA Food Safety and Inspection Service.

No one has reported any adverse reactions, the USDA said on Friday. However, anyone who may have purchased the Ling Ling pot stickers should check their freezers and throw the bag away, or return it from where it was bought.

The pot stickers are sold at grocery stores like Target, Safeway and Lucky.

Consumers with food safety questions can call the toll-free USDA Meat and Poultry Hotline at 1-888-MPHotline (1-888-674-6854)

Nearly 60,000 pounds of frozen, stuffed chicken products sold all over the United States are being recalled for possible salmonella contamination.

According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS), Serenade Foods, a Milford, Ind. company, is recalling approximately 59,251 pounds of frozen, raw, breaded and pre-browned stuffed chicken products that might be contaminated with Salmonella Enteritidis.

The frozen, raw, breaded and pre-browned, stuffed chicken items were produced on February 24, 2021, and February 25, 2021. The following products are subject to recall:

5-oz individually plastic-wrapped packages of “Dutch Farms Chicken with Broccoli & Cheese” with lot code BR 1055 and BEST IF USED BY FEB 24 2023.

5-oz individually plastic-wrapped packages of “MILFORD VALLEY CHICKEN WTH BROCCOLI & CHEESE” with lot code BR 1055 and BEST IF USED BY FEB 24 2023.

10-oz box of two individually plastic-wrapped packages of “MILFORD VALLEY CHICKEN CORDON BLEU” with lot code CB 1055 and BEST IF USED BY FEB 24 2023.

5-oz individually plastic-wrapped packages of “KIRKWOOD Raw Stuffed CHICKEN, BROCCOLI & CHEESE” with lot code BR 1055 and BEST IF USED BY FEB 24 2023.

5-oz individually plastic-wrapped packages of “KIRKWOOD Raw Stuffed CHICKEN CORDON BLEU” with lot code CB 1056 and BEST IF USED BY FEB 25 2023.

The products are subject to recall bear establishment number “P- 2375” inside the USDA mark of inspection. These items were shipped to distributors nationwide.

FSIS has been working with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and public health partners to investigate a multistate outbreak of 28 Salmonella Enteritidis illnesses in 8 states, with onset dates ranging from February 21 through June 28, 2021. Unopened intact packages of raw, frozen, breaded chicken stuffed with broccoli and cheese were collected from an ill person’s home and tested positive for the outbreak strain of Salmonella Enteritidis. FSIS continues to work with the CDC and state and local public health partners on this investigation.

Consumption of food contaminated with Salmonella can cause salmonellosis, one of the most common bacterial foodborne illnesses. The most common symptoms of salmonellosis are diarrhea, abdominal cramps, and fever within 12 to 72 hours after eating the contaminated product. The illness usually lasts 4 to 7 days. Most people recover without treatment. In some persons, however, diarrhea may be so severe that the patient needs to be hospitalized. Older adults, infants, and persons with weakened immune systems are more likely to develop a severe illness. Individuals concerned about an illness should contact their health care provider.

The products of concern may appear to be ready-to-eat but are actually raw and need to be fully cooked according to the manufacturer cooking instructions on the package before consumption. The labels for these products identify cooking instructions for preparation in an oven. The products should not be prepared in the microwave or air fryer. FSIS advises all consumers that particular attention needs to be taken to safely prepare and cook these frozen, raw poultry products to a temperature of 165 F. The only way to confirm raw poultry products are cooked to a temperature high enough to kill harmful bacteria is to use a food thermometer that measures internal temperature, as indicated in this chart. Additionally, FSIS advises all consumers to keep raw poultry away from other food that will not be cooked. Use one cutting board for raw poultry and a separate one for fresh produce and cooked foods.

Second Harvest Food Bank of Central Florida is inviting the community to a virtual behind-the-scenes look at its facilities to hear how the organization is continuing to “feed hope” during these difficult times.

On Tues., July 20, “Food for Thought” virtual tour participants will be given an inside look at the food bank’s active warehouse and distribution center via Zoom. The virtual session will demonstrate how Second Harvest distributes enough food for 300,000 meals a day. Attendees will also learn about the different programs Second Harvest maintains to help feed those facing food insecurity across Orange, Osceola, Lake, Seminole, Volusia and Brevard counties.

For more than a year, Second Harvest has doubled its daily distribution as a direct result of the economic impact from the COVID-19 pandemic. The organization needs the community’s help more than ever to meet the increased demand.

To register for a “Food for Thought” tour, visit www.FeedHopeNow.Org/Tour.

From the National Hurricane Centers, 11 am update, Tropical Storm Elsa has jogged a bit east placing Central Florida within the cone of uncertainty. However, it is still too early to accurately forecast the path of the tropical storm.

With its formation early in the morning of July 1, Tropical Storm Elsa dethroned 2020’s Tropical Storm Edouard as the earliest E-named storm in the Atlantic basin. Edouard formed July 6, 2020.

Elsa is forecast to pass near or over portions of the Windward Islands or the southern Leeward Islands on Friday, the National Hurricane Center has reported as of 5 am. It is expected to then move into the eastern Caribbean Sea late Friday, and move close to the southern coast of Hispaniola on Saturday.

Some intensification is likely for the next day or two since Elsa is expected to be in an environment of warm sea-surface temperatures, fairly low vertical wind shear, and high mid-level relative humidity. The potential interaction of the storm with the mountainous landmasses of the Greater Antilles later in the forecast period could disrupt the circulation somewhat.

Universal Orlando Resort will open an all-new quick service food venue called Bend The Bao at Universal CityWalk on June 15, featuring a variety of delicious items that fuse popular Asian cuisine with diverse ingredients like crab cakes, pork belly, kimchee fried chicken, and more – creating an entirely new mash-up that “bends” the idea of a traditional bao.

Bend The Bao will be the latest original concept dining experience created exclusively by Universal Orlando, combining unique theming with an extraordinary twist on the traditional quick-service restaurant. Incredibly colorful pop art representing the creatures of the Chinese Zodiac will welcome guests to the venue, where they can grab tasty bao buns like the Crab Cake Bao with Maryland-style crab cake, shredded lettuce and mustard aioli, the Duck Bao with braised duck, kimchee slaw, XO sauce, cilantro and five-spice aioli, and more.

Bend The Bao will be located on the second level of Universal CityWalk, adjacent to the Universal Cinemark theatre, and will open daily from 10:30 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. beginning Tuesday, June 15. For more information about Universal CityWalk, please click here.

Royal Caribbean has gotten the thumbs up from the CDC to begin simulated cruises from the United States beginning this summer.

Royal Caribbean announced on Tuesday that it has been granted permission to launch a “trial” cruise on the ship Freedom of the Seas June 20-22. The CDC posted an approval letter on the approval on Facebook by Royal Caribbean CEO Michael Bayley.

Royal Caribbean must operate their first two trial voyages with at least 10% of the ship’s capacity, and remind those trial passengers that currently cruising is deemed high risk by the CDC with regard to COVID-19.

Face masks and social distancing policies will be in place during the simulated cruises.

Cruise line operators will be able to avoid these restrictions if they confirm that 98% of their crew and 95% of passengers are vaccinated.
