The St. Cloud City Council on Wednesday held the first of two public hearings on its 2022-23 city budget. The proposed $209.2 million budget holds the millage rate at 5.1128, where it has been since 2016-17.

One mill is equal to $1 in property tax levied per $1,000 of a property’s assessed value. Based on the average property value of $232,000, the average homeowner pays $1,187 in city ad valorem taxes per year. Ad valorem taxes pay for such city services as public safety, law enforcement, parks and facilities, utilities, roads, lighting and planning.

The final public hearing on the millage rate and budget approval will be held on Wednesday, Sept. 21, at 6 p.m. in Council Chambers at City Hall.
