Brett Cumberland slugged two long balls, but the backstop’s offensive output was not enough as the Florida Fire Frogs dropped their second game of the season, 4-3, in a six-inning rain shortened home opener at Osceola County Stadium on Saturday night.

Bryce Wilson was expected to make his season debut, but mother nature had other ideas for the 20-year-old. After taking his warm up pitches to start the game, rain poured down causing an hour and fifty-two-minute delay to start the game. Chad Sobotka started in replace of Wilson allowing no runs and striking out three in his 2.2 innings of work.

Florida (1-2) struck first in the run column as Cumberland (2×3, 2 HR, 2RBI) launched a solo home run off the scoreboard in the third inning. Alejandro Salazar (2×2, RBI) continued his hot hitting collecting a hit in four straight at-bats dating back to yesterday’s ballgame.

Devan Watts came into the game in the top of the third inning, but it wasn’t until the fifth inning when the Daytona bats came alive. The Tortugas blasted three home runs in the fifth including solo shots by TJ Friedl and Malik Collymore, and a two-run homer by catcher Tyler Stephenson. The fifth frame was the first time in team history Daytona slugged three home runs in an inning.

Daytona righty Ryan Olson got the start on the mound for the Daytona (2-1) and picked up the win allowing three runs and striking out three in five innings of work. Olson allowed a second home run to Cumberland in the bottom of the fifth after inducing a crucial double play off the bat of Cristian Pache .

Lightning strikes in the area caused a second delay which ended in the game being called.

The two teams will face off in the fourth and final game of the series Sunday morning with the first pitch scheduled for 11 a.m. LHP Joey Wentz (0-0,-) will toe the rubber for the Fire Frogs as the Tortugas will send Wennington Romero (0-0,-) to the mound.
