As millions of Floridians prepare for one of the busiest travel periods of the year, the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (FLHSMV) and the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) have launched the “Arrive Alive” campaign—a statewide initiative urging drivers to put safety first this holiday season.

Running now through the end of the year, the campaign focuses on reducing crashes, injuries, and fatalities by reminding motorists to stay vigilant, follow traffic laws, and make responsible choices behind the wheel.

A Call for Safer Roads Across Florida

The annual holiday travel surge brings greater congestion and heightened risk on Florida’s roadways. According to state officials, reckless and negligent driving—such as speeding, tailgating, failing to yield, or running red lights—remains a leading cause of crashes and fatalities statewide.

“Reckless and impaired driving are not just violations of the law—they are threats to the lives of every Floridian on the road,” said FLHSMV Executive Director Dave Kerner. “This holiday season, we are reminded that every decision behind the wheel carries consequences. Let us all choose patience over aggression, responsibility over risk… arriving alive means protecting not only yourself, but everyone sharing Florida’s roads.”

FHP Colonel Gary Howze emphasized that troopers witness the consequences of unsafe driving every day.

“Our troopers see firsthand the devastating aftermath of drivers that choose distraction, unlawful speed, or impairment over safety,” Howze said. “This holiday season, your Florida Troopers will be out in full force to ensure our roadways are as safe as possible. Enforcement alone is not enough—every driver has a personal responsibility to make smart, responsible decisions.”

The Arrive Alive campaign highlights several key safety priorities:

Reckless and Negligent Driving

FLHSMV stresses that unsafe behaviors—like speeding, aggressive driving, or ignoring traffic signals—often lead to preventable tragedies. Drivers are encouraged to practice defensive driving and remain patient during heavy holiday traffic.

Impaired Driving

Impaired driving remains a deadly problem, contributing to one in three traffic fatalities in Florida. Alcohol, drugs, and even some prescription medications can severely affect judgment and reaction time.
Motorists are reminded that DUI penalties can include arrest, fines, license revocation, and a conviction that stays on record for 75 years.

Seat Belt Safety

Seatbelt use continues to be a lifesaving tool, reducing the risk of injury or death in a crash by nearly 50%. Florida law requires seatbelts for all front-seat passengers and anyone under 18, but officials encourage everyone in the vehicle to buckle up, every time.

Distracted Driving

In Florida, a crash occurs every 44 seconds—and distraction is a major factor.
While texting is the most recognized distraction, activities like eating, adjusting navigation, or interacting with passengers can also take a driver’s attention off the road. FLHSMV urges motorists to keep their eyes, hands, and minds on driving, and for passengers to help eliminate distractions.

A Simple Message: Make It Home Safely

With more families traveling, shopping, and attending holiday gatherings, FLHSMV and FHP hope the campaign’s message resonates: safety is always in season.

“This holiday season, stay alert, stay safe—make it home today,” officials remind motorists.
