KISSIMMEE, Fla. — The City of Kissimmee will illuminate its fire stations and City Hall in blue from July 24 through July 27 in recognition of World Drowning Prevention Day on July 25, joining the World Health Organization’s “Unite to Turn the Tide” campaign to raise awareness about water safety and drowning prevention.
The initiative, led by the Kissimmee Fire Department, comes as drowning continues to be a significant public safety concern across Florida. According to the Florida Department of Health in Osceola County, 531 people died from unintentional drowning statewide in 2024, including eight Osceola County residents. In addition, the Florida Department of Children and Families reports that 18 children have died in drowning incidents across Central Florida so far this year, including seven in Osceola County. Those figures include both residents and visitors.
Fire Chief Jim Walls said World Drowning Prevention Day serves as an important reminder that water safety requires constant attention.
“Drowning prevention starts with awareness, preparation, and a commitment from all of us to look out for one another,” Walls said. “Simple actions, such as designating a water watcher and learning to swim, can make a significant difference in protecting our families and neighbors.”
While the observance highlights water safety each July, the Kissimmee Fire Department stresses that drowning prevention is a year-round responsibility, particularly during the summer months when more families spend time at pools, lakes, and other waterways.
The City of Kissimmee supports local drowning prevention efforts through the Bob Makinson Aquatic Center and partnerships with the Florida Department of Health in Osceola County and the Swim Global Project. Those collaborations help expand access to swim lessons, water safety education, and other community resources.
The fire department encourages families to remember the ABCs of Drowning Prevention:
- A – Active adult supervision: Never leave children unattended near water.
- B – Barriers: Install and maintain fences, gates, and locked doors to prevent unsupervised access to pools.
- C – Classes: Enroll children in swim lessons and learn water safety and CPR.
Residents can also help prevent drownings by assigning a dedicated, distraction-free “water watcher” whenever children are in or around water.
