An attempted burglary in St. Cloud on Independence Day ended with a homeowner’s family member confronting and shooting a suspected intruder, who was later arrested by deputies.

The incident took place around 8:30 p.m. on July 4th at a home near Deer Run Road in St. Cloud. According to the Osceola County Sheriff’s Office, a man arrived at his mother’s home and noticed the back door had been left open. Once inside, he heard noises coming from a bedroom and quickly armed himself with a gun.

After calling out to determine who was inside the house, the man reportedly charged down the hallway toward him. In response, the resident fired a single shot, striking the intruder in the leg. He then held the man at gunpoint until deputies arrived.

The man, identified as 37-year-old Mitchell Platt, was taken to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries before being released into law enforcement custody. Investigators say burglary tools were found inside the home near where Platt was located.

Platt has since been arrested and charged with burglary and possession of burglary tools.

No other injuries were reported.
