With school history within reach, playoff hopes hanging in the balance, and one of Osceola County’s fiercest rivalries set for another showdown, the final Friday night of the regular season promises plenty of excitement across the local high school football landscape.

Gateway leads the headlines with an opportunity to reach a milestone never before achieved by the Panthers, while St. Cloud looks to strengthen its postseason chances against Lake Howell. Poinciana and Liberty will renew their Battle of the Boulevard rivalry, and Osceola awaits word on whether its challenging schedule will be enough to earn a playoff berth.

Gateway Eyes Historic Eighth Victory

Gateway (7-2) will look to secure the first eight-win season in program history when the Panthers host Celebration (1-8) Friday night, adding another milestone to an impressive campaign under head coach Marlin Roberts.

The Panthers are coming off a dominating 42-0 victory over Cypress Creek, a game in which Gateway built a commanding early lead and substituted liberally throughout a second half played entirely under a running clock.

Despite limited playing time, Gateway’s offensive standouts delivered impressive numbers.

Running back Nydrell Thigpen rushed for 116 yards and two touchdowns while adding another score through the air, pushing his season rushing total to 1,350 yards with 19 touchdowns scored.

Johnny Reyes contributed 132 combined rushing and receiving yards with two touchdowns, while quarterback Aristotle Span Jr. completed 8 of 13 passes for 183 yards and two touchdowns and added another score on the ground.

Defensively, Gateway recorded its school-record third shutout of the season.

Celebration enters Friday’s matchup following a 43-7 loss to Horizon.

While a traditional FHSAA playoff appearance remains uncertain, Roberts said Gateway has notified the Florida High School Athletic Association that it would accept an invitation to the Florida Invitational Tournament (FIT) if selected.

The tournament provides postseason opportunities for the top 16 non-playoff qualifiers in Classes 4A through 6A.

“Based on the season, it’s not what we wanted but its still an opportunity to play in the post-season and it is something these guys deserve,” Roberts said.

For the Panthers, Friday’s matchup offers an opportunity to cap one of the most successful regular seasons in school history.

St. Cloud Fighting for Playoff Berth

St. Cloud (6-3) enters its regular-season finale knowing a victory over Lake Howell could be critical to extending its season.

The Bulldogs, winners of their last two games, will host the Silverhawks at 7 p.m. Friday with an opportunity to finish 7-3 and strengthen their case for an FHSAA playoff berth.

St. Cloud is coming off a dramatic 14-7 victory over Harmony in the 22nd edition of the Soldier City Classic. Quarterback Jeremiah Lattier scored the winning touchdown with just 25 seconds remaining, lifting the Bulldogs past their longtime rivals.

The challenge Friday will be containing a Lake Howell offense capable of producing points through both the air and on the ground.

The Silverhawks (4-4), currently second in Class 5A, District 5, are led by quarterback Bryan Mabrey, who has thrown 25 touchdown passes against just five interceptions.

Lake Howell averages approximately 250 passing yards and 160 rushing yards per game. Junior receiver Marcus Morris leads the receiving corps with eight touchdowns, while four Silverhawks receivers have recorded at least 20 catches and four touchdowns apiece.

Although Lake Howell has dropped consecutive games to Melbourne and Oviedo, those opponents have a combined 14-4 record and are both headed to the postseason.

St. Cloud coach Mike Short understands the significance of the matchup.

“Lake Howell is a really good team that can be explosive on offense,” Short said. “Based on our strength of schedule, I believe we will be in the post-season with a win. If not, I’m not so sure so it’s a big game for us. Hopefully we’ll have a big crowd out there supporting us.”

A win would give St. Cloud seven regular-season victories and provide another strong argument for postseason consideration.

Battle of the Boulevard Renews Liberty-Poinciana Rivalry

Liberty will travel to Poinciana for the 20th playing of the Battle of the Boulevard, a rivalry that has experienced a remarkable reversal of fortune over the past four seasons.

The Chargers (1-8) dominated the early years of the series, winning the first 15 meetings, many by lopsided margins.

That changed in 2022 when Poinciana snapped the streak with a 56-0 victory. Since then, the Eagles (5-4) have won four consecutive meetings by a combined score of 176-16.

Poinciana enters the finale looking for its sixth victory after seeing its district championship and FHSAA playoff hopes slip away last week.

The Eagles were undefeated in district play at 3-0 before suffering losses to Haines City, 22-13, and George Jenkins, 28-17. Those defeats dropped Poinciana to third place in the district and eliminated the Eagles from state playoff contention.

Poinciana has also notified the FHSAA that it would accept an invitation to the Florida Invitational Tournament if selected.

Friday’s rivalry game gives the Eagles an opportunity to finish the regular season with a winning record while Liberty looks to end Poinciana’s recent dominance in the series.

Osceola Awaits Playoff Fate Following Difficult Regular Season

Although Osceola’s regular season has already ended, the Kowboys (3-7) remain in contention for an at-large postseason berth despite a difficult campaign marked by injuries, offensive struggles, and one of the toughest schedules in Florida.

Osceola closed its season with a narrow 16-13 road loss to Bartow, a contest that included several officiating decisions that drew questions.

Head coach Eric Pinellas turned to running back Javontay Barnett at quarterback and praised his performance, while the Kowboys defense once again kept the team within striking distance.

The three-win season is Osceola’s lowest victory total in decades, but the team’s strength of schedule could play a significant role in determining its postseason fate.

The Kowboys were ranked fourth in last week’s Class 5A, Region 2 rankings, a position that would have placed them among the four teams receiving at-large playoff invitations.

Nine of Osceola’s 10 opponents remain in contention for postseason spots. Three of the Kowboys’ losses came by just three points, while another was a 13-0 road defeat against Dr. Phillips.

“Based on our rankings it’s not out of the question that we get in the playoffs, especially if Lakeland moves into the top eight and goes to open division,” Pinellas said. “We will practice this week and see how everything pans out.”

For now, the Kowboys will continue preparing while awaiting the final playoff selections.

Tohopekaliga Looks to Reach .500 as Paradiso Considers Future

Tohopekaliga (4-5, 1-3) will look to rebound from a 38-0 loss to powerful Lake Nona (8-1, 4-0) when the Tigers travel to face Community Ridge (0-8) next week.

A victory would allow Tohopekaliga to finish the regular season at .500 and become eligible for a postseason bowl game.

The matchup could also carry personal significance for longtime head coach Anthony Paradiso, who is considering retirement.

If Paradiso decides to step away, the game could mark the conclusion of his coaching tenure with the Tigers, although a bowl invitation could provide an additional opportunity to lead his team.

Nova Lakes Closes Inaugural Season Against University

Nova Lakes (2-7) will wrap up its inaugural football season when the team hosts University (8-1).

Under head coach Anthony Rivers, Nova Lakes has spent its first year establishing the foundation of its football program while competing against more established opponents.

The season finale will provide another opportunity for the young program to gain valuable experience as it looks toward its second year.

For Osceola County football, Friday night marks the end of the regular-season journey, but the postseason picture remains far from settled. With Gateway chasing a historic milestone, St. Cloud battling for a playoff spot, and several teams hoping to extend their seasons, there is still plenty to play for under the lights.
