St. Cloud, FL — The cafeteria at Orlando Health St. Cloud Hospital was filled with applause, pride, and heartfelt emotion last week as hospital staff, leadership, and family gathered to celebrate a meaningful milestone — the graduation of Marco Vivas, the hospital’s first graduate of the Orlando Health WE BUILD Program.
Positively Osceola was on scene as the hospital community came together to honor Marco’s completion of the 12-week paid internship program, which is designed to create pathways to employment for individuals with unique developmental and learning abilities. The celebration brought together dozens of staff members, the hospital’s President and CEO Brian Wetzel, and Marco’s mother, who proudly watched as her son was recognized for his hard work and growth.
Throughout his time in the WE BUILD program, Marco worked alongside the hospital’s Environmental Services and Food & Nutrition teams, gaining hands-on experience while developing both job-specific and interpersonal skills. His journey through the program showcased what is possible when opportunity is paired with mentorship, encouragement, and a supportive workplace culture.
During the celebration, the Orlando Health team — often described by staff as a family — surprised Marco with a cake decorated with one of his favorite themes, Spider-Man. The thoughtful gesture added an extra layer of joy to an already memorable moment, as the room filled with cheers, smiles, and heartfelt congratulations recognizing Marco’s accomplishments and progress.
Marco is now officially returning to Orlando Health St. Cloud Hospital not as an intern, but as a part-time team member. The transition marks a new chapter in his journey — a new path, a new role, and an even bigger family as he continues his career within the Orlando Health system.
Building Skills, Confidence, and Careers
The WE BUILD program provides paid internship opportunities for adults 18 years of age or older with intellectual and developmental disabilities, focusing on skill-building, mentorship, and real-world experience within healthcare environments. Interns are guided through meaningful work while developing confidence, independence, and professional readiness.
Since launching in 2021, the WE BUILD program has graduated 25 interns across the Orlando Health system, with many now employed in roles such as food service, maintenance, supply management, and patient support. Participants are paid above minimum wage and receive health insurance, reinforcing Orlando Health’s commitment to inclusive employment and community integration.
The program is supported through partnerships with the Down Syndrome Foundation of Florida, the UCF Center for Independent Living, and Special Olympics Florida.
Marco’s celebration was more than a graduation — it was a reflection of what inclusive programs can achieve when individuals are supported, valued, and empowered. His success highlights the impact of mentorship and a workplace culture that leads with compassion.
👏 Congratulations to Marco Vivas, and thank you to Orlando Health St. Cloud Hospital for continuing to lead with heart and create opportunities that change lives.
