KENANSVILLE, Fla. — When a male peafowl spreads his spectacular train of feathers into a shimmering fan, it’s easy to understand why the peacock has been capturing people’s attention for centuries.
The Indian peafowl is one of the colorful bird species that has been featured at Wild Florida Adventure Park’s Gator Park in Kenansville.
And here’s an animal fact that might surprise some visitors: technically, they aren’t all peacocks.
Peafowl is the name for the species. Adult males are called peacocks, females are known as peahens, and their young are called peachicks.
The male’s spectacular appearance is what made the peacock famous.
Its elongated upper-tail feathers can display brilliant colors and distinctive eye-like markings. During courtship, a male raises and fans those feathers into an enormous display designed to capture a female’s attention.
Peafowl are native to the Indian subcontinent, but the birds have been introduced to other parts of the world and are now familiar sights in a number of communities.
Their beauty can sometimes overshadow another interesting fact: peafowl can fly. Despite their large appearance and long feathers, they are capable of short flights and may fly into trees to roost.
