Osceola Kowboys softball pitcher Shelby Jones became the third college signee on the 2020 team on Thursday after inking her grant to St. Petersburg College.

“I chose it because I loved the area on my visit and it’s a good fit for me,” she said.

The Titans are a two-year junior college program; Jones said she has an eye on continuing on to Division II Florida Tech in Melbourne.
In her junior season, Jones was 10-7 with a 2.03 ERA and 138 strikeouts in 124 innings. She and the Kowboys, who feature seven seniors and five who have or will sign with colleges, opened the 2020 season Thursday against Tohopekaliga.

Jones said she’ll be working hardest on increasing her velocity in her senior OHS season.

Longtime assistant Miranda Watford takes over as head coach, and said Jones will do well collegiality because of her competitive nature. Jones’ longtime travel ball coach, Keith Pereira of Osceola Overdrive echoed that.

“Nobody works harder than Shelby. She’s out there on her days off,” Watford said.

“Her work habit is what will propel her at the next level. She loves the game and will be successful in college, without a doubt,” Pereira said.
