Positively Osceola
Shattering the school and Osceola County scoring record they established a week earlier at the Orange Belt Conference, the St. Cloud Bulldogs boys golf team captured the 7A, District 6 title with a stellar 14-under par 274 over the 6,702-yard, Par 72 Royal St. Cloud Golf Club on Tuesday morning.
Freshman sensation Ayden Febres led the charge with a 6-under 66 to claim the individual district championship. Only a double bogey on the 10th hole marred a near perfect round that included eight birdies – including three in a row after the double. Teammate Arnold Pouncy was nearly as solid with four birdies, and eagle against a lone bogey in shooting a 67 to take second place.
“We spent the hole week trying to get better and our goal was to have four counting scores under par,” St. Cloud boys’ coach Alejandro Sanchez said. “We just missed that goal by one shot, but it was an absolutely outstanding day on the course by the entire team. We’re playing really solid, consistent golf at the right time of the year and hopefully it will carry over to next week’s region championship.”
St. Cloud’s other counting scores include a 69 from Nick Lehto and a level par 72 from senior captain Ethan Parish. “It would have been awesome if all four of us could have broken par,” Parish said. “I hit a lot of greens in regulation today and simply could not have a putt fall.” Parish had two bogeys on the day but neutralized them with eagle putt on the 515-yard 13th hole. The fifth member of the team, Dominick Velazquez had an up-and-down round with five birdies and six bogeys to shoot a non-counting one-over, 73.
In addition to the three St. Cloud golfers, four other players finished with sub-par rounds. Viera’s Jeremiah Smith took third with a 68; Federico Tadnini (Lake Nona) and Kim Shayan (Viera) tied for fourth with a 70; while Viera’s Ryan Woodward was solo 6th with a 71.
In addition to St. Cloud’s district championship performance (66-67-69-72-276); Viera also advances to next week’s 3A, Region 2 Championship with a 5-under 283. Third place Lake Nona (309) should advance as an at-large team when the final field is announced Thursday.
It was not the only record setting performance by St. Cloud this week.
On Monday, the Lady Bulldogs broke their own county record (established last week at the Orange Belt Conference Championship) with an eight-over 296 to grab the 3A, District 6 runner-up spot behind state power Lake Nona – who finished with a level par 288.
Sophomore Abigail Murphy and junior Maddie Burda fired matching 1-uner par 71s to lead the Lady Bulldogs. Senior Karolyna Adams had a 76 and Olivia Siegel added a 6-over 78 to round out St. Cloud’s counting scores. The fifth member of the team, Mackenzie Stott shot 97 for the non-counting score.
Murphy, who captured the OBC Championship last week with a 74, was three strokes better in districts — carding four birdies and just three bogeys over the 5,442-yard course ; while Burda posted three birdies and two bogeys on her round.
“As was the case last week, everything fell into place for us today,” St. Cloud coach Thomas Hayes said. “The post-season is a lot like baseball, you want to be peaking at the right time and we appear to be doing so.”
There was some tremendous golf shot on the afternoon. Lake Nona sophomore Alexandra Snyder, the defending 3A individual champion, earned medalist honors with a 67. She was joined under par by teammates Briel Royce (70) and Sofia MacApagal (71); while teammate Isabell Melendez posted an 80 for a level par team score of 288.
Viera, led by Hannah Hall’s two-under 70, came in third with a 309.
“I’ve been doing this a long time,” Osceola County Athletics Director and Tournament Administrator Ryan Adams said. “I’m pretty sure no county girls’ team has ever posted four scores in the 70s. The fact that they shattered their own county record that they set last week is phenomenal. Lake Nona was even more impressive and when you add in Hannah Hall from Viera, we had a situation where a one-under didn’t even get you on the podium and I can say I never saw that either.”
Up next for both the Bulldogs and Lions is the Region 2 Championship, where the eight district champions and runner-ups will be joined by eight at-large teams from the region. A top two finish is needed to automatically advance to states, but based on current state rankings both teams are good position to advance as at-large teams if they falter at regionals
