On Thursday, the St. Cloud City Council unanimously approved an ordinance prohibiting motorized devices—such as electric bikes, Segways, and motorized scooters capable of speeds 20 mph or higher—from being used on city trails and sidewalks.
The new rule aims to improve safety for pedestrians and recreational users, following concerns raised by residents and visitors about fast-moving vehicles on shared pathways.
Wheelchairs are exempt from the ordinance, and city staff performing duties such as trash collection or trail maintenance are still permitted to use motorized mobility devices.
“This is in response to safety concerns raised by residents and visitors related to the operation of motorized vehicles on trails and sidewalks,” said Parks and Recreation Director Stephanie Holtkamp. “It covers paths such as Chisholm Park Horse Trail, Florida Avenue Trail, Peghorn Nature Park Trail, and Lakeshore Park Trail, including the Rummell Road Trail extension.”
Violations of the ordinance will be enforced by law enforcement and code enforcement officers.
