Cocoa Beach is gearing up for its 16th annual Surfing Santas event, a one-of-a-kind holiday celebration set for December 24. Starting at 7:30 a.m., the beach at 3 Minutemen Causeway (where the causeway intersects with Route A1A North Atlantic Avenue) will transform into a festive spectacle of surfboards and Santa suits, drawing thousands of participants and spectators.

What began in 2009 as a whimsical family outing has evolved into a globally recognized holiday tradition, earning its title as the “Greatest Show on Surf.” Last year, the event attracted over 10,000 spectators and nearly 600 surfing Santas dressed in their jolliest attire. This year’s event promises to be even bigger, with hopes of setting a new record for the most surfing Santas riding the Atlantic waves.

Event founder George Trosset reflected on its humble origins: “Watching this explode into one of the largest and most-talked-about holiday events has been nothing short of phenomenal.”

Whether you’re an experienced surfer or just want to join in the fun, Surfing Santas welcomes participants of all skill levels and ages. The event is free to attend and open to everyone—just bring a surfboard and your most festive holiday garb. Spectators are also encouraged to dress up, with prizes awarded for the best-themed costumes.

“This is a festive, fun-in-the-sun family event,” said Peter Cranis, Executive Director of Florida’s Space Coast Office of Tourism. “For our out-of-town guests, it’s a perfect way to get into the holiday spirit while soaking up Florida’s sunshine and unique Space Coast vibe.”

Since 2013, Surfing Santas has raised more than $300,000 for local charities, including Grind for Life, an organization that assists cancer patients and their families with travel expenses, and the Florida Surf Museum, which preserves the state’s rich surfing heritage. Proceeds come from donations, T-shirt sales, and raffles, all supporting these causes as well as local school sports teams.

With activities continuing until noon, the event will feature plenty of holiday cheer, live entertainment, and nearby businesses open to serve participants and visitors alike. Parking will be available in the downtown parking ramp and surrounding areas.
