By: J. Daniel Pearson

Prior to the opening of fall training camp, St. Cloud head coach Michael Short publicly said he was entering the season with “quiet optimism.” But when you talk in depth to the second year coach, his “quiet optimism” really sounds a lot more like confidence as he looks to improve on last year’s 7-3 record.

“It’s kind of hard not to be excited about the coming year. We return a lot of starters on both sides of the ball. They had a solid season last year and they are all a year older, a year stronger and a year more experienced,” Short said. “I absolutely believe we have a chance to be a pretty good football team.”

That optimism starts on offense, where the Bulldogs return a veteran offensive line, a three-year starter at quarterback, and both their top returning receiver and rusher.

Junior Logan King returns at quarterback after throwing for 1900 yards and 18 touchdowns a year ago. Short says King assumed leadership of the offense a year ago and has the ability to be one of the top quarterbacks in the area. “He throws and incredible deep ball, definitely as good as any player I have coached in the past,” Short said. “He did a pretty good job at taking care of the ball (just seven interceptions) and has a really good grasp of what we are trying to do offensively.”

Two-way star TJ Griffin (WR/DB, 5-8, Junior) split time at running back as a sophomore but led the team in rushing (496 yards), yards per carry (6.5) and rushing touchdowns (9). He can catch the ball out of the backfield and might be used on kick returns this season. “He’s simply electric with the ball in his hands and just keeps getting better and better,” Short said. “I tend to ride him pretty hard and he used to resent that but he now understands why. When I give him hard time it’s because I know he can be great and I want him to realize that.”

King’s favorite target is Owen Conner, who almost eclipsed the 1000 yard mark in receiving a year ago (43-854-6 TD). Short says finding a complimentary receiver to play on the other side of Conner would be a concern in training camp. “We have some solid candidates, just waiting for someone to step up and take the job,” Short said.

The offensive line will be strength of the Bulldog offense this year. Division-1 prospect Conner Howes (OT, 6-6, 300) anchors a line that includes Daniel Torres (Center), Shawn Eplin (G), and transfer Omar Perez.

St. Cloud suffered the majority of their graduation losses on the defensive line and linebacker, but Shorts says the Bulldogs have a lot of talent to replace those losses. The Bulldogs will switch from a 4-3 to a 3-4 this season and believe Jayden Woods, Rylan Taromino, and Kareem Eglin will give them a solid defensive front.

Junior Landon Millman moves to inside linebacker from the outside. As a sophomore, he piled up 37 tackles, including six for loss. Short is so high on him, he says Millman will wear the #2 jersey – an honor reserved for St. Cloud ‘s defensive leader.

St. Cloud returns its entire starting secondary, including Tyler Green, Griffin, Bryce Williamson and Malcom Senono. Tashard Smith, who is playing his first year of football, has shown tremendous potential as a defensive back. “We’re pretty stacked back there,” Short said. “TJ is so solid, most teams won’t even challenge him and that makes it easier on the rest of the defense.”

Two years ago, then head coach and current Athletics Director Bryan Smart talked about how St. Cloud has good front line players but depth was a major concern as they could not overcome significant injuries. That has changed the last couple of years under Short, who had 75+ players in when training camp opened. “We had something like 28 freshmen come out this year and a lot of those guys are really good athletes – especially on defense,” Short said. “If I have to move some players from defense to offense, I’ll be able to do that and I really believe we have some freshmen that can play if we need them.”

In Week 10 of the high school football season, just a short hop from the end, teams will either play county rivalry games, or play for their district lives. In a rare twist, all eight teams will play in Osceola County.

Harmony (2-5) at St. Cloud (5-3): Ah yes, the Soldier City Classic. Harmony leads this eastern county clash, 8-6, all-time, including big wins the last two years to keep the Brass Bugle. A game where the records truly get thrown out when they meet — an 0-5 Harmony knocked off 5-0 St. Cloud, 14-2, back in 2014.

Somebody’s looking to rebound at Tom Gannarelli Field. Harmony was a district champ last year but had to replace many starters and is laying groundwork for the future, and the Bulldogs have dropped three in a row after a 5-0 start, and are looking to unleash a Garhett King-lead offense that averaged 30 points per game during the win streak. Harmony has given quarterback reps to Keaghan Black and Chris Skeldon the last two weeks to try to find rhythm, and has been feeding the ball to senior Kenneth Torres in the run and pass games. This will be entertaining.

Lake Nona (6-2) at Osceola (7-1): Pegged as likely the District 8A-6 championship game, and the prophecy is fulfilled. The Kowboys pitched their fourth shutout in a row last week, beating Manatee, 13-0 in Bradenton in a second-half downpour, and they’ll need another big defensive showdown in this game, a complete contrast in styles. While OHS Coach Doug Nichols will feed the ball to DeWayne McGee, Ja’Randy Swint, Davon Wells, Jamison Jones and Roshaun Dudley powering a running game that’s averaging nearly 300 yards per game, Lions Coach Anthony Paradiso will challenge the Kowboys’ secondary with an Air Raid offense. QB Conner Johnson has thrown for 2,578 yards and 28 touchdowns in eight games, a normal season for Lake Nona standards. Four receivers — Manny Stokes, Elijah Johnson, Joey Cochran and Andre Cooper — all have at least 40 catches or 400 receiving yards. Winner walks into the 8A playoffs, the loser will fight to get one of the last wild-card spots. If Osceola wins, it claims a ninth consecutive district title.

Poinciana (3-5) at Liberty (0-8): The Eagles have never won the Battle of the Boulevard in 12 tries, but likely have their best opportunity to do so since 2007, the inaugural battle, in which PHS led 16-0 in the fourth quarter only to watch the Chargers rally for the win in its first-ever game. Liberty has put the offense’s eggs in the basket of running back Ardairious Ingram, while Poinciana will counter with the arm (1,159 passing yards) and legs (202 rushing) of QB Justin Carpenter. Who will own Poinciana Boulevard in 2019?

Celebration (3-5) at Tohopekaliga (4-4): A historic game last year; the Tigers got their first-ever win, 26-19, in their first year. Toho coming off a 28-7 win over Harmony that saw big plays in the offense (Tahquis Armstrong with a 70-yard run and 58-yard reception for scores) and defense (Javon Morrison picked off two passes, Kareem Dinzey had another he returned for a score). The Storm scored 36 points against Cypress Creek last week — and lost, 40-36. Expect CHS to heavily rely on QB Will Bohn in all facets of the offense again.

Auburndale (6-2) at Gateway (0-8): The Panthers will again try to get their first win of the year in their final District 6A-9 game against a Bloodhound gang rebounding from a 3-7 season a year ago. They’ll have to bottle up running back Treveon Raggs (859 yards, 13 TDs). Friday is the final home game for senior all-everything Panther Phillip Bangura, who has scored touchdowns in his career via the rush, pass, interception, kick and punt return.

Harmony went up 9-7 in the third quarter thanks to a safety. Valentine scored on a 39-yard scamper with 9:06 left in the game before Harmony took back the lead for good.
George Jenkins 53, Poinciana 13: Where you had Bulldogs vs. Bulldogs on the east coast, you had Eagles vs. Eagles in Lakeland, and it was the home Jenkins (5-2) Eagles who scored early and often to fly high over Poinciana (3-4).

The damage was done in the first quarter, when Jenkins returned the opening kickoff for a touchdown, and recovered a fumble on another to set up a scoring drive from midfield.

Justin Carpenter scored on a two-yard quarterback sneak to make it 12-7 early in the first quarter, but the Eagles got no closer. Carpenter hit Anthony Holtham on a 40-yard touchdown pass in the fourth quarter.

Bartow 20, Liberty 6: The Chargers made game of it down in Polk County when Arderious Ingram capped a 15-play, 75-drive that took seven minutes with a five-yard touchdown run that made it 7-6 late in the first quarter.

But the winless team couldn’t slow a Yellow Jacket (4-3) running game that ran the ball effectively enough to open the passing game and get two second-half touchdown passes.

Liberty (0-7) takes another crack at getting that first win next week when it hosts Lake Gibson (7-0), who was a 57-0 winner over Gateway on Friday. The Panthers (0-7) will travel to Palm Bay Bayside next week in a District 6A-9 game.

OHS impressive in thumping Harmony; St. Cloud, Celebration get wins

Tohopekaliga finally got to celebrate Friday Night Lights on its own campus Friday, and while it ended with a 32-21 loss to Jupiter, the Tigers witnessed who should lead them on many future Friday nights with his arm.

While Jupiter quarterback Johnathan Mosely was a run-first option (21 carries, 124 yards, 2 TDs) Friday, THS sophomore Tyler Wesley kept his eyes downfield and trusted his receivers, going 18-of-40 for 174 yards in his first varsity start.

Tigers Coach Marc Deas said he was comfortable putting the ball, and the game, in Wesley’s hands.

“What’s special about him is when he felt the pressure he kept his vision downfield, looking for an open man,” Deas said. “Turnovers and penalties, that’s what gasses an offense, we put our backs against the wall too much. And we still had a chance in the second half. It was the little things that hurt us tonight.”

The Tigers committed four costly turnovers that directly to 13 Jupiter points and indirectly to seven more.

The game was the first ever at the school’s stadium; Tigers’ administrators could only watch last year as construction problems forced games to be played down Boggy Creek Road at Austin-Tindall Park. A home-side capacity crowd looked on as Tohopekaliga rallied in the second half from a 20-0 halftime deficit to cut the lead to one score two different times.

Jupiter dominated the first half possession, taking seven minutes to score a touchdown on the games’ opening drive, then making it 14-0 after a fumble gave it a short field, and 20-0 on a scoop-and-score fumble recovery.

The third quarter was all Tigers. They score on their first drive, an 11-play, 60-yard journey ending with Wesley’s 14-yard touchdown pass to Ahmeen Dinzey, then Nathaniel Isaac recovered a fumble on Jupiter’s next snap. Blake McCullough turned it into points with an eight-yard run and it was 20-13 just five minutes into the half.

Jupiter did score on its next drive – Dinzey then blocked the PAT attempt – but the Tigers marched downfield again and McCullough (seven carries, 52 yards) scored again from nine yards out and Dinzey caught a two-point conversion from Wesley to make it 26-21 with 8:33 left in the ball game, when fortune favored the home team. The ensuing kickoff hit a Jupiter upback and Kareem Dinzey recovered at the Warriors’ 48-yard line, giving the Tigers the ball with the chance to take the lead after such a rough first-half.

But the offense stalled. The defense got them the ball back deep in their own territory with six minutes left but Tohopekaliga went backwards and a fumbled punt snap in the end zone gave Jupiter an insurance touchdown.

The Tigers (0-1) will look to clean up those “little things” with another home game next Friday against St. Petersburg Dixie Hollins.

In other action from Friday night:

The usually run-heavy Osceola Kowboys got three long touchdown passes from Devon Wells to romp past the Harmony Longhorns, 45-0, at Harmony, despite missing three starting offensive linemen and two defensive backs with injuries.

After winning the coin toss Coach Don Simon’s Longhorns took to the air, led by 15-year-old-quarterback Keegan Black. The horns drove hard down the field on 5 strong passes and found themselves on Osceola’s 8-yard-line, only to be picked off in the end zone by Osceola’s Daniel Cooper.

From there it was all Osceola, who scored on a powerful run only minutes later. The Kowboys and their QB Devon Wells, led 14-0 at the end of the first half, but continued to dominate Harmony as the Kowboy defense shut down the Longhorns, keeping them scoreless throughout the game and under 24 yards of offense in the second half.

Osceola’s defense picked off Harmony 3 times and handed the Horns 3 sacks which kept them off balance most of the game and under 170 yards total offense for the game,

The Kowboys offense, known for its strength on the ground rushed for over 250 yards and showed their backfield, unchanged from last year, will likely find themselves running their way toward a 9th District Championship.

Coach Don Nichols shared, “It was a tough opponent, Coach Don Simon does a great job with those guys. We’ve got a ways to go. Our kids kids hung in there, didn’t play well at the beginning, but they turned it on at the end, and it was a good night overall.”

Osceola, who heads to Cocoa next week, also got a pair of defensive scores.

St. Cloud notched its fifth consecutive regular season win (the Bulldogs closed 2018 with four wins) with a 20-7 decision over Palm Bay Bayside. Garhett King tossed touchdown passes to Patrick Forysthe and Romeo Medina, the latter a 63-yard “boom” play that made it 20-0 in the third quarter. Forsythe added an 11-yard TD run in the second quarter. The Bulldogs come home next week to play a rare Thursday game against Golden, Colorado.

Gateway got touchdown runs from Jacovi Bryant and Phillip Bangura, but it wasn’t enough for the rebuilding Panthers in a 42-12 loss to Merritt Island. The Panthers, who were in the playoffs three of the last four years, returned just eight varsity players and have four freshman in starting roles. GHS is at Hagerty, a 33-7 loser to Lake Nona (the Panthers fell 45-7 to Nona last week), next Friday.

For the second year in a row, Celebration won its season opener, cruising past Pine Ridge, 34-7. The Storm travel to Poinciana next week. The Eagles fell to Lake Howell, 28-8, Friday. Justin Carpenter tossed a 20-yard touchdown pass to Ligarrius Coachman.

Liberty, another team restocking its football cupboard, fell to the triple-option rushing attack of Lake Brantley in a 55-38 loss. The Chargers host Sebring next week.
