KENANSVILLE, Fla. — With wide, curious eyes and a long black-and-white striped tail, the ring-tailed lemur is one animal that’s difficult to mistake for anything else.

Visitors can discover these distinctive primates at Wild Florida Adventure Park’s Gator Park in Kenansville, where animals from Florida and around the world are part of a day filled with wildlife experiences.

Ring-tailed lemurs are native to Madagascar, the large island off Africa’s southeastern coast. Unlike many primates that spend most of their time high in the trees, ring-tailed lemurs spend considerable time on the ground.

And that famous tail isn’t just for looks.

A ring-tailed lemur’s tail can be longer than its body and helps members of a group remain visible to one another while traveling. Lemurs are social animals, typically living together in groups, and communicate through sounds, body language and scent.

They also have another interesting habit visitors may recognize: soaking up the sun. Ring-tailed lemurs are known for sitting upright with their arms extended, allowing the morning sun to warm their bodies.

At Wild Florida, seeing a ring-tailed lemur is only one part of the adventure.
