What are some things that’ve become ritual in downtown Kissimmee on St. Patrick’s Day weekend?

The short list: wearing green, and supporting Osceola County Meals on Wheels at the March for Meals.
It’s part of a national campaign held every March by the Meals on Wheels Association of America to raise national awareness of senior hunger issues and encourage local community participation.

This year’s 5K run/walk is Saturday, March 14, with registration at 7:30 a.m. and the race at 8, through downtown and Lakefront Park. Presented again by the Kissimmee Utility Authority, this fun event was created to bring awareness to our community of senior hunger and to raise funds for the county’s Meals on Wheels program, headed by Osceola County Council on Aging Vice President Wilda Belisle.

And what’s more fun than going five kilometers (3.1 miles) with a group of friends or co-workers? Do it right, join the “Team Challenge” and your group could win “Most Spirited Team” or “Largest Team” awards.

There will be awards for the top 10 male and female finishers and the top male and females over 65 to finish. The $25 registration fee goes to $30 on March 1 and $35 the day of the event. Kids 12 and under are $15 and seniors over 65 $20 through March 13.Teams of five or more pay just $20 per person, with the proceeds going to end senior hunger in Osceola County.

The race is the middle one of the “Try 2 Tri”, a joint marketing effort with Kissimmee Main Street’s Kissimmee 5K, held last week, and the Transition House Alcohol Awareness Month Family Fun 5K, April 4

“We are so excited to be joining together with Kissimmee Main Street and The Transition House in the marketing effort for our upcoming 5K events,” Belisle said.

In the meantime, get your team together, put on your green, show your spirit to help fight senior hunger by supporting the Meals on Wheels in Osceola County and make a positive difference in our community.
