The probability of rain increases to 80% Tuesday night as a new cold front makes its way into Central Florida.

Temps will increase back into the low 70s on Wednesday and Thursday before much cooler air returns for the holiday weekend.

Wednesday is the first day of winter, with rain chances at 30% for the day,

On Thursday and Friday we’ll see a 40% chance of rain. Watch out for falling iguanas depending where you are in Florida, and make sure to have plenty of hot cocoa and coffee around for the Christmas weekend!

Out of an abundance of caution as we anticipate and prepare for severe weather rolling in, all athletic events and extracurricular activities at all schools have been cancelled for this afternoon. In addition, the district’s Lights On After School events scheduled for today at schools are being postponed. Please note that Extended Day, the 21st Century program, and tutoring will go on as normal today. Thank you for your understanding.

OUC is now offering a rebate of up to $200 to its customers for a smart solution for overwatering that will also help lower monthly water bills. Here’s some more info to share with your readers:

WaterSense labeled irrigation controllers, which act like a thermostat for a sprinkler system telling it when to turn on and off, use local weather and landscape conditions to tailor watering schedules to actual conditions on the site. With proper installation, programming and maintenance, homeowners can use these controllers instead of standard controllers to save water.

The new controller must be a standalone EPA WaterSense labeled controller. Plug-in or add-on units are not eligible. This rebate is only available for OUC potable water customers with in-ground irrigation systems. Homes using reclaimed water or water from a well, lake or pond for irrigation are not eligible.

As we’ve seen quite often however, once storms move into the Gulf, specifically later in the Hurricane season when water temperatures are very high, they can gain momentum quickly as they approach their predicted landfalls.

At of 10 p.m. Friday night, the depression had maximum sustained winds of 35 mph, and was moving west-northwest at 8 mph.

Depending on when it reaches tropical storm strength, this new system would be named Sally or Teddy. The uncertainty is because another strong tropical system in the eastern Atlantic Ocean could reach tropical storm strength first, and could then be named Sally.

Those heavy rains may be headed to South Florida as early as late Friday night and East Central Florida on Saturday. Tropical Storm conditions are possible along portions of the east coast of Florida and depending in Isaias current direction, Osceola County will possibly experience some tropical force winds.

According to the National Hurricane Center, we can expect 2-4 inches of rain. Localized flooding is possible, so take the time now to safely ensure that gutters are clear and sewers in the area are not clogged with debris.

Isaias was officially designated as a Category 1 storm by the National Hurricane Center after midnight, but is projected to reach Category 2 strength Friday night or early Saturday as it continues in its path near Florida.

Isaias is expected maintain a northwestward trek passing over the southeastern Bahamas Friday morning, the central Bahamas Friday evening and east coast of Florida Saturday afternoon.

While the storm’s center is not predicted to make Floridian landfall, Isaias’ hurricane-force winds extend 45 miles from its core, and its tropical-storm-force winds can reach up to 205 miles.

American computer models show Isaias hugging the east coast and passing by the state as it churns north, while some of the European models show it more on the eastern side of the state.

The disturbance, formerly known as Potential Tropical Cyclone Nine, developed a closed circulation south-southwest of Puerto Rico, Wednesday night, making it possible for the National Hurricane Center to reclassify the system as a tropical storm.

The system is still in a formative state, but eventually, one cluster of thunderstorms may begin to take over in this large storm and could cause a shift to the position, which is why the forecast path is still uncertain.

As of Wednesday night, the National Hurricane Center said the storm was about 155 miles south of Ponce, Puerto Rico, and was moving west-northwest at 20 mph. Isaias was packing 50 mph winds with gusts as high as 52 mph.

A tropical storm warning is in effect for Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands and several other countries. A tropical storm watch is in effect for the central Bahamas.

The musical, originally slated for the live stage in March, will be filmed and streamed at scheduled times from Friday, July 31 through Sunday, August 9th. Once on this Island tells the story of a peasant girl who falls in love with a wealthy boy from the other side of their tropical island. She begins a difficult journey to prove love is stronger than death, guided by the Calypso Gods. Ti Moune ultimately breaks the societal wall and unites the people of her island. Written by the Tony Award-winning songwriting team of Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty, Once on this Island is a true celebration of storytelling.

The production, directed by Dominic Del Brocco, has been restaged to respect social distance guidelines for the safety of the cast. Once on this Island features an incredibly talented cast of men and women who are honored to bring this beautiful story of love, inclusion, and acceptance to life.
