Florida Highway Patrol is searching for the driver who fatally struck a man who was crossing West U.S. Highway 192 in the Four Corners area early Monday morning, then left the scene of the accident before the man was hit by multiple other vehicles.

Troopers said the crash took place just before 5:30 a.m. on Irlo Bronson Memorial Highway near Westside Boulevard. According to investigators said a man was walking south on West Irlo Bronson Memorial Highway, west of Westside Boulevard and walked not in a crosswalk into the direct path of an unknown vehicle when he was hit. The man was then struck by another approaching car, and potentially others after that.

FHP said the driver of the first vehicle who the struck the man left the scene. They are searching for that driver, who they say may have been in a Toyota SUV or truck that they say may now have front-end damage. Troopers said there is an active criminal investigation underway.

The medical examiner’s office will update FHP once they have positively identified the deceased man.
