Orlando Health Dr. P. Phillips Hospital hosted a special reunion on Wednesday morning, bringing together former patient Joseph Cassis, a children’s book author, and the dedicated healthcare team that cared for him during his hospitalization.

Cassis, 72, a resident of Iowa, fell ill during a September visit to Orlando-area theme parks with his wife. Admitted to Orlando Health Dr. P. Phillips Hospital, he was diagnosed with a pulmonary and respiratory illness and remained hospitalized for several days. His stay coincided with Hurricane Helene, which brought strong winds and rainfall to the area, adding another layer of complexity to his experience.

Expressing heartfelt gratitude for the exceptional care he received, Cassis returned to the hospital to thank his care team in person. He gifted each team member a keychain adorned with silver guardian angel wings, symbolizing their role in his recovery. Additionally, he shared copies of his “Squire with Fire” children’s book series, spreading the joy of his creative work with those who supported him during a challenging time.

“They were all very pleasant and made me feel like I was part of the family,” said Cassis during the reunion. “I have to say, it was overwhelming to see this when a hurricane was making it’s way through the area.”

The hospital team, moved by Cassis’s gesture, reflected on the reunion as a powerful reminder of the impact of their work.

“This is why we do what we do,” one team member shared. “Seeing a patient recover and return to thank us is incredibly fulfilling.”

Orlando Health Dr. P. Phillips Hospital continues to exemplify excellence in patient care, turning moments of challenge into stories of hope and healing.
