KISSIMMEE, Fla. — It was a night of history, celebration, and recognition at Gateway High School on Friday, October 30, as the Panthers capped off their remarkable 2026 varsity football season with a commanding 42-6 victory over Celebration High School, securing the program’s first-ever eight-win season.
But the celebration didn’t end with the final whistle.
With teammates, coaches, school leadership, and supporters gathered on the field following the historic victory, Gateway junior running back Nydrell Thigpen was named Positively Osceola’s Osceola Air Player of the Year, recognizing an outstanding season and his impact on one of the most successful football teams in Gateway history.
The Panthers finished the regular season with an impressive 8-2 record, a milestone that reflected the team’s determination, hard work, and commitment throughout the season.
For Thigpen, the recognition was another achievement in a varsity career that has already established him as one of Osceola County’s most productive offensive players.
A Season Built on Power, Determination, and Production
Thigpen’s 2026 season showcased the combination of strength, speed, and determination that has made him a cornerstone of Gateway’s offense since his freshman year.
According to his varsity statistics, Thigpen recorded 1,299 rushing yards and 175 receiving yards in nine reported games, totaling 1,474 yards from scrimmage and averaging an impressive 163.8 yards per game.
His production this season continued a remarkable three-year varsity career that has seen him accumulate:
- 3,342 rushing yards
- 529 receiving yards
- 156 passing yards
- 4,027 total offensive yards
- 134.2 total yards per game across 30 games
As a sophomore, Thigpen rushed for 1,383 yards and added 262 receiving yards, following a freshman season in which he rushed for 660 yards.
Those numbers demonstrate the consistency and durability that have made him one of the most important players in Gateway’s offensive attack.
A Standout Performance That Set the Tone
Thigpen’s impact was evident from the beginning of the season.
Following Gateway’s hard-fought 13-12 season-opening victory over Lake Minneola, Thigpen earned Positively Osceola’s Osceola Air Player of the Week honors for Week 2, setting the stage for what would become an extraordinary season.
Against Lake Minneola, Thigpen rushed for 158 yards on 24 carries, averaging 6.3 yards per attempt. He scored Gateway’s first touchdown on an eight-yard power run and played a critical role in the Panthers’ decisive second-half scoring drive, gaining 41 yards on four carries.
His performance became even more important after fellow running back Honor Kim suffered an injury early in the third quarter, allowing the opposing defense to focus more attention on Thigpen.
Despite the additional pressure, he continued to produce.
“Just trying to do my job,” Thigpen said following that victory. “I set goals before a game and felt I could have done better but the most important thing is we came up with a win.”
Gateway head coach Marlin Roberts has consistently praised Thigpen’s physical running style and his ability to gain difficult yards.
“Nydrell is one of those backs that simply doesn’t go down on first contact,” Roberts said earlier in the season. “He’s always carrying two or three defenders for those extra yards.”
Roberts has also questioned why more college football recruiters have not shown greater interest in the talented junior, whose performances have continued to demonstrate his potential at the next level.
A Historic Night for Gateway Football
Friday’s victory over Celebration provided the perfect setting for recognizing Thigpen’s accomplishments.
Gateway jumped out to a 14-0 lead in the first quarter, added another 14 points in the second, and carried a commanding 28-0 advantage into halftime.
The Panthers added seven points in both the third and fourth quarters to complete the 42-6 victory, while Celebration scored its lone touchdown in the final period.
The win marked Gateway’s eighth victory of the season, establishing a new school record and giving the Panthers a memorable conclusion to their regular-season schedule.
Following the game, Thigpen received both Player of the Game recognition and the 2026 Positively Osceola’s Osceola Air Player of the Year Award, celebrating not only his performance on Friday night but also his contributions throughout the season.
Coach Marlin Roberts Also Honored on the Field
The celebration continued as Gateway head football coach Marlin Roberts was named Positively Osceola’s Osceola Air Coach of the Year, recognizing his leadership during the Panthers’ historic season.
Now in his 18th year as Gateway’s head coach, Roberts has spent nearly two decades mentoring student-athletes, building relationships, and helping young players develop both on and off the football field.
His dedication was rewarded with a milestone season that saw Gateway reach eight victories for the first time in school history.
Gateway High School Principal Georgette Paul-Zin, who began her tenure at the school the same year Roberts became head coach, was also on hand for the special postgame recognition.
The celebration included an enthusiastic Gatorade shower for Roberts as players and supporters shared in the excitement of the historic achievement.
For Gateway, the evening represented more than another victory. It was a celebration of years of dedication, perseverance, and Panther pride.
