KISSIMMEE, Fla. — Osceola History has welcomed Nick Mathes as its new executive director, bringing an experienced museum leader and historian to the organization as it continues its mission of preserving and sharing the stories that have shaped Osceola County.

Mathes holds two master’s degrees from Liberty University — a Master of Arts in Human Services and a Master of Arts in History — and brings professional experience in museum leadership to his new role. Most recently, he served as Museum Director of the Florida Air Museum in Lakeland.

“We are excited to welcome Nick Mathes as the Osceola History Museum’s new Executive Director,” said Paola Grimes, a member of the Osceola History Board of Directors. “His leadership comes at an important time for the museum as we continue to grow our programs, strengthen our connection with the community, and preserve the stories that make Osceola County unique.”

Grimes added that the organization is confident Mathes’ experience, enthusiasm and vision will be an asset as Osceola History looks toward the future.

Mathes takes the helm of an organization whose roots in Osceola County stretch back more than 75 years. The Osceola County Historical Society was chartered on Oct. 29, 1949, by Charles and Twylah Hartley of St. Cloud and Alma Hetherington of Kissimmee. The organization was established to preserve historical artifacts and share the stories of the county’s heritage.

Today, Osceola History’s mission is to collect, preserve and share Osceola County’s history while promoting the area’s cultural and natural heritage.

The nonprofit operates the Osceola County Welcome Center and History Museum, which opened on West Vine Street in Kissimmee in 2012, as well as Pioneer Village at Shingle Creek, which features historic structures representing some of the people, industries and communities that helped shape Osceola County.

More than 17,000 people each year learn about Osceola County’s history through visits to the Welcome Center and History Museum and Pioneer Village. Osceola History also provides educational programs and field trips, hosts events throughout the year and participates in community outreach efforts.

As Mathes begins his new role, he will lead an organization tasked not only with protecting Osceola County’s past, but also with finding new ways to connect that history with residents and future generations.
