As temperatures continue to soar in Osceola County, it’s crucial to be vigilant about the dangers of heat exposure, especially concerning children and pets left in vehicles. Osceola County and Osceola County Fire Rescue EMS are reminding the community to  “Beat the Heat: Check the Back Seat,” emphasizing the importance of always checking the back seat of your car before leaving, to ensure no one is left behind.

The Risks

Even on a relatively mild day, the interior of a car can heat up rapidly, becoming dangerously hot within minutes. This can lead to heatstroke, a potentially fatal condition, particularly in young children and animals. According to health officials, the temperature inside a parked car can increase by 20 degrees in just 10 minutes, even with windows slightly open. For instance, on a 70-degree day, the temperature inside a car can reach 110 degrees or more, creating a hazardous environment.

In the last 12 years, 475 children have died nationwide from heat stroke suffered while in a vehicle. Half of these were children that were forgotten by a parent or other caregiver, and nearly 20 percent died when parents knowingly left their child in a vehicle. The rest died playing in an unattended vehicle.

Simple Steps to Prevent Tragedy

  1. Double-Check: Always take a moment to look in the back seat before locking your car. This simple habit can save lives.
  2. Keep Cars Locked: When not in use, keep your vehicle locked to prevent children from climbing in unsupervised. This is particularly important as kids might see the car as a play area and accidentally lock themselves inside.
  3. Place a Reminder: Leave an item you need in the back seat, such as a purse, phone, or work bag. This can serve as a reminder to check the back seat when you exit the vehicle.
  4. Communicate: If someone else is transporting your child or pet, establish a system to ensure they have arrived safely. A simple call or message can prevent a tragic accident.

Community Awareness and Responsibility

Osceola County encourages residents to spread awareness about this vital safety issue. Community members can contribute by sharing the “Beat the Heat: Check the Back Seat” message through social media, local organizations, and neighborhood groups. By raising awareness, we can collectively reduce the risk of heat-related incidents and protect the most vulnerable members of our community.

Remember, it only takes a few seconds to prevent a tragedy. Make it a habit to “Beat the Heat: Check the Back Seat” every time you park your car.
