Osceola County’s prescribed fire contractor is scheduled to do a prescribed burn this morning on Makinson Island.

A factor that will weigh in the decision wis how much, if any, rainfall the area received Thursday night.

The work could begin around 10 a.m. Friday morning and would be completed by 3 p.m. The dock and amenities will still be available to the public but the hiking trail around the perimeter will be closed during the prescribed burn.

Makinson Island is a 132-acre property in Lake Tohopekaliga that offers primitive group camping by permit only. All visitors must provide their own transportation to and from the island.

Safely-controlled prescribed fire techniques improve and maintain habitats for many wildlife species. Such fires are an effective management tool that reduces risk of uncontrolled wildfire, improves access to the land and provides better recreational opportunities, while enhancing the beauty of the land.
