Rev. Mary Downey, founder and CEO of Hope Partnership, announced her candidacy for Osceola County Commissioner, District 4 on Monday. Downey has led efforts to combat homelessness, foster economic stability, and develop affordable housing, and is now looking to take on a new role in the county. The District 4 seat is currently held by Commissioner Cheryl Grieb, who has served on the Osceola County Commission since her election in November 2014. District 4 encompasses parts of both Kissimmee and St. Cloud, making it a key area within the county’s jurisdiction.

“Osceola County is experiencing tremendous growth, and with that growth comes both exciting opportunities and significant challenges,” Rev. Downey said. “I’m running for County Commissioner to prioritize affordable housing, promote the arts, champion sustainable development, and address transportation needs. My campaign is dedicated to giving District 4 residents a strong voice on the County Commission and tackling growth with thoughtful, forward-thinking policies that work for everyone.”

Downey has spoken openly about her personal experiences with poverty and homelessness, which she says give her a unique perspective on leadership. With a professional background that spans journalism, ministry, and nonprofit leadership she says her campaign will focus on addressing some of the county’s most pressing challenges. According to Downey, her priorities include tackling the housing crisis with innovative solutions that balance development, strengthen infrastructure, and improve access to transit. She also plans to advocate for greater investment in arts and culture, which she believes can drive economic development, boost tourism, and enrich the local community. Downey says she will champion efforts to promote high-tech industries and forward-thinking strategies aimed at creating high-paying jobs, diversifying the economy, and reinforcing infrastructure.

Additionally, she emphasizes the importance of transparent and inclusive leadership, pledging to foster open communication and ensure that residents’ voices are central to decision-making processes.

“Osceola County is vibrant and resilient, full of diverse voices, unique gifts, and incredible potential,” Rev. Downey said. “I am ready to stand with my neighbors, lead with integrity, and ensure we build a future where every family can thrive.”
