Summer vacation can be exciting for kids, with no homework, later bedtimes, more time with friends, and of course, no school classes! But, it’s not all fun and games for some families and children who struggle financially. Some families have to be worried about where the next healthy meal will come from because the children no longer have access to free or reduced lunches that they receive during the school year. During the summer, many struggling families have to spend more money on food and therefore have to make tougher household budgetary decisions.
One in five children living in Central Florida struggle with hunger, according to Feeding America’s Map the Meal Gap 2019 report. However, Second Harvest Food Bank provides a solution to this summer challenge through their Summer Food Service Program , which provides free, nutritious meals and snacks to kids under the age of 18.
Second Harvest Food Bank has provided over one million summer meals to kids since 2008 by delivering healthy food daily to summer camps, libraries, day cares and other places in the community where children gather.
