Special Olympics Florida athletes from across the state gathered in Lake Nona on Saturday, June 21, for a high-energy training camp as they prepare for the upcoming 2026 Special Olympics USA Games. The event served as a major milestone for the athletes, offering a chance to refine their skills, connect with teammates and coaches, and learn about health and wellness strategies crucial to their training journey.

Hosted at the Aloft Orlando Lake Nona hotel—with training sessions held at various top-tier venues across Orlando and Kissimmee—the camp featured a packed schedule of activities, including sport-specific practices, educational workshops, and an exciting reveal of Team Florida’s official uniforms for the 2026 USA Games.

Athletes participated in a wide range of sports, including track & field, basketball, bocce, cheerleading, flag football, powerlifting, soccer, softball, swimming, volleyball, gymnastics, golf, tennis, bowling, and the newly added pickleball. Practice venues included Lake Nona Performance Club, USTA National Campus, North Shore Golf Club, Three Point Bowling, and SportsRock Gymnastics in Kissimmee.

“This training camp is not only about physical preparation, but also about fostering team spirit, community, and the confidence that drives our athletes forward,” said Jim Stratton, Communications Director for Special Olympics Florida. “It’s an opportunity to celebrate their commitment and give the public a glimpse of the heart and effort behind Team Florida.”

While attendance at the training camp is mandatory for athletes pursuing a spot on Team Florida, it does not guarantee selection. The final Team Florida roster for the 2026 USA Games is expected to be announced later this summer.

The event also provided valuable media opportunities, with members of the press invited to capture video of athletes in action, conduct interviews with athletes and coaches, and document the much-anticipated Team Florida uniform unveiling.

The day served as a powerful reminder of the dedication and determination of Florida’s Special Olympics athletes—athletes who continue to inspire with every stride, throw, lift, and goal on their journey to the 2026 USA Games.
