Leading the event as Master of Ceremony was John Woods, Post Commander AMVETS Post 33. The ceremony began with the posting of colors by St. Cloud High School’s Junior ROTC and the Pledge of Allegiance led by the Girl Scouts of Citrus – Mishawaka. Local singer Kayla Domres delivered a stirring a Capella rendition of the Star-Spangled Banner to what looked like one of the highest attended wreath ceremonies in years.
Chaplain David Nigh, from the American Legion Post 80 opened the ceremony with prayer, followed by the lowering of the American flag to half staff by Marine Corps League 1092, The September 11th Detachment.
Elected officials in attendance included Osceola County Commissioner Ricky Booth, St. Cloud Mayor Nathan Blackwell, City Council Member Ken Gilbert, State Representatives Paula Stark and John Cortez – who delivered a speech during the ceremony, and U.S. Congressman Darren Soto. Representatives from various community organizations presented flags and laid wreaths near the podium, symbolizing profound gratitude and respect for our fallen heroes, followed by a moment of silence.
Once again, Leo Murphy, from the Osceola County Veterans Council led an Armed Forces Medley that featured the anthems from each branch of the military.
The ceremony concluded with a 21-gun salute and the sound of Taps, played in “echo fashion,” by members of the Osceola County Veterans Council, serving as a reminder of the sacrifices made by courageous servicemen and servicewomen.
The Memorial Day Wreath Laying Ceremony at Mt. Peace Cemetery was a remarkable event with a significant turnout, providing a profound opportunity for the community to reflect and honor the memory of those who gave everything for freedom and democracy. The organizers, volunteers, and participants deserve commendation for their tireless efforts in making this annual solemn and meaningful ceremony a reality.
