According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, a plant worker at the distributor, Prestage Foods, Inc., in St. Pauls, North Carolina, found metal shavings within a package of ground turkey.

The federal recall of 38,475 pounds of ground turkey includes 1.3 pound packages labeled “Publix ground turkey breast with natural flavorings,” 1.2 pound packages labeled “Fit & Active Fresh Ground Turkey with natural flavorings” and 1 pound packages labeled “Weis Markets Fresh Ground Turkey Breast.”

All of the packages included in the recall have ink jet printing on the side of their trays displaying the first four digits of 7268 and 7269.

The items were shipped to retail distribution centers in Florida, Alabama, Connecticut, Georgia, New York, North Carolina, South Carolina, Pennsylvania and Tennessee, according to the USDA recall announcement.

“Consumers who have purchased these products are urged not to consume them. These products should be thrown away or returned to the place of purchase,” the announcement issued Monday said.
