SeaWorld Orlando officials said Kayla, their 30-year old Orca, died Monday after a brief illness.

SeaWorld is still uncertain of the exact cause of death and won’t know for a number of weeks when the results of a post-mortem examination are complete, SeaWorld said.

According to SeaWorld Kayla began showing signs of discomfort on Saturday afternoon causing her veterinarians to immediately begin treating her based on a physical exam.

Her condition continued to worsen on Sunday causing SeaWorld to administer around-the-clock care until her passing Monday.

Kayla was one of SeaWorld fans’ favorites and sadly among the last orcas at SeaWorld Orlando.

In 2016  SeaWorld announced that it was stopping its orca breeding program. There has been no public announcement that they have changed their decision.

We will update this story as more information becomes available.
