KENANSVILLE, Fla. — Silent wings, powerful talons and eyes designed to find prey in low light make owls some of the most fascinating hunters in the bird world.

At Wild Florida Adventure Park, visitors can get a closer look at birds of prey while exploring Hawk Swamp, one of the wildlife areas within the Gator Park.

Owls have adaptations that make them extraordinary predators. Their large eyes are especially effective in low-light conditions, while specialized feathers help reduce the sound created by their wings as they fly.

Their hearing can be just as impressive.

Many owl species use a combination of exceptional hearing and vision to locate prey, even when an animal may be difficult to see. Those abilities make owls highly effective hunters of rodents and other small animals.

Owls also have another famous ability: dramatically turning their heads. While they can’t rotate them completely around, their neck structure allows them to turn their heads far beyond what humans can.

For families, seeing these adaptations up close can turn a visit into an opportunity to learn about the important role birds of prey play in nature.

Hawk Swamp is part of Wild Florida’s larger Gator Park, which features more than 200 native and exotic animals.

The adventure doesn’t have to stop there.

Guests can drive their own vehicle through Wild Florida’s Drive-thru Safari Park or take to the water aboard an airboat through the Headwaters of the Florida Everglades — where keeping your eyes on the sky can reveal even more of Florida’s birdlife.

The next time you visit Wild Florida, don’t just look for the gators — remember to look up.
