KENANSVILLE, Fla. — When an Ankole-Watusi comes into view during a drive through Wild Florida Adventure Park’s safari, there’s usually one feature visitors notice first.

Those horns.

The spectacular cattle breed is known for enormous horns that can stretch outward several feet, creating one of the most dramatic silhouettes visitors can encounter inside Wild Florida’s Drive-Thru Safari Park.

Ankole-Watusi cattle trace their heritage to Africa, where cattle have held economic and cultural importance for generations.

But those enormous horns aren’t simply decorative.

The horns contain an extensive network of blood vessels. Blood circulating through them can release heat before returning to the animal’s body, an adaptation that can assist with temperature regulation in hot environments.

Despite their imposing appearance, Watusi are cattle — and seeing them up close provides visitors with a chance to appreciate just how extraordinary domesticated animal breeds can become through generations of adaptation and selective breeding.

At Wild Florida, they’re part of a 170-acre Drive-Thru Safari Park featuring more than 150 exotic and native animals along a four-mile route.

Families remain in their own vehicle while exploring the safari, where giraffes, zebras, bison, wildebeest and other animals can transform a drive through Kenansville into something much more adventurous.

Once the safari is finished, guests can explore Wild Florida’s Gator Park and its native and exotic animals.

Or take the adventure onto the water.

Wild Florida’s airboat tours travel through the Headwaters of the Florida Everglades, giving guests an opportunity to search for alligators, birds and other native wildlife while experiencing Central Florida’s natural landscape.

Some animals make you look twice. The Watusi might make you stop counting how many times you looked.

Wild Florida Adventure Park is open Monday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and is closed Sundays. Reservations can be made Monday through Saturday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
