KENANSVILLE, Fla. — It’s one of the animal kingdom’s classic questions: Is a zebra black with white stripes or white with black stripes?

Visitors may find themselves debating that question as they encounter Grant’s zebras during a trip through Wild Florida Adventure Park’s Drive-Thru Safari Park in Kenansville.

Grant’s zebra is a subspecies of plains zebra native to Africa and one of the animals Wild Florida has highlighted as part of its safari experience.

Those famous stripes aren’t just beautiful — they’re also completely individual.

No two zebras have exactly the same stripe pattern, giving each animal its own natural identification system.

Scientists have studied zebra stripes for generations, investigating possible roles ranging from social recognition and temperature regulation to protection from biting insects. Research has provided particularly strong evidence that the stripes help reduce biting-fly landings.

Whatever their evolutionary purpose, there’s no mistaking a herd of zebras when they appear during a Wild Florida safari.

Guests explore the 170-acre Drive-Thru Safari Park from their own vehicle along a four-mile route featuring more than 150 exotic and native animals.

Along the way, families can encounter animals ranging from towering giraffes and massive American bison to wildebeest, Watusi cattle and other species.

Then it’s time to discover another side of Wild Florida.

Visitors can walk through the Gator Park, featuring more than 200 native and exotic animals, or board an airboat for a journey through the Headwaters of the Florida Everglades.

Wild Florida Adventure Park is open Monday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and is closed Sundays. Reservations can be made Monday through Saturday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
