In a move that underscores a steadfast commitment to education and community prosperity, Osceola County has once again cast a unanimous vote in favor of the transformative Osceola Prosper program. During Monday’s County Commission meeting, all five commissioners earmarked an impressive $8.3 million to continue fueling this initiative that has already begun reshaping the educational landscape for local students.

Launched in 2022, Osceola Prosper emerged as a beacon of hope and opportunity for high school graduates across the county. This pioneering program offers graduates from public, charter, private, and homeschool settings a unique chance to pursue further education without the burden of financial constraints. Participants have the flexibility to attend Valencia College for degree programs or accelerated skills training or to opt for the specialized programs at Osceola Technical College. The objective is clear: to equip Osceola’s youth with the knowledge, skills, and qualifications needed to thrive in today’s competitive job market.

Originally funded through federal allocations received under the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security Act (CARES), the program’s undeniable success has prompted a strategic shift in its funding mechanism. Moving forward, Osceola Prosper will primarily draw from the county’s general funds, supplemented by a residual pool of CARES funds. This transition reflects the program’s sustainability and the county’s dedication to investing in its future leaders.

The initiative’s inception during the chairmanship of Osceola Commissioner Brandon Arrington marked the beginning of a new era in local education policy. The Osceola County Commission’s continued support, paralleled by the endorsement of Valencia College President Kathleen Plinske, signifies the strong leadership backing that has been pivotal to the program’s success.

The impact of Osceola Prosper is both profound and far-reaching. In 2023, approximately 2,500 high school graduates seized the opportunity to advance their education through the program. This followed nearly 2,300 participants in its inaugural year, accounting for about half of the county’s graduating class each year. Such remarkable participation rates have catalyzed a significant uptick in college attendance figures, with Valencia College experiencing a nearly 20% increase in its college-going rate between 2021 and 2023.

Osceola Prosper is more than just a scholarship program; it is a comprehensive initiative that promises to transform lives, foster economic growth, and strengthen the fabric of the community. By removing financial barriers to higher education, the program not only opens doors to individual advancement but also contributes to a more skilled and educated workforce, poised to meet the challenges and opportunities of the future.

On April 2, from 5:30pm-7pm at Valencia College’s Osceola Campus there will be an informational ‘Prosper Night’ where parents and students can learn more about the program. There will also be a virtual session on April 6 from 10am-11am.

As Osceola County continues to champion the cause of education through initiatives like Osceola Prosper, it sets a compelling example for communities nationwide. The program’s success serves as a testament to the power of strategic investment in human capital and the transformative potential of collective action. With continued support and funding, Osceola Prosper stands to redefine the educational and economic landscape of Osceola County, ensuring that its residents are not just ready for the future but are actively shaping it.
