The FDA has authorized a rapid home-based coronavirus test that can deliver results within minutes, according to Lucira Health, Inc.
The first-ever FDA approved home COVID-19 test will potentially allow individuals to avoid drive-thru testing sites and long testing lines as coronavirus infections continue to surge across the nation.
The single-use test kit from Lucira Health, Inc. relies on nucleic acid amplification technology, which is considered more accurate than antigen tests. The test is a nasal swab test and is approved for individuals 14 and older.
According to Lucira, the home test kit achieved a 94% positive percent agreement and a 98% negative percent agreement. The cost is expected to be less than $50, according to the company’s website.
